I’m reading the new cj Tudor book “serenity falls”. Really enjoying the story. My problem! No one walks anywhere they “pad”. It’s so jarring once you notice it

My other bug bear is when I’m listening to a book and the narrator keeps pronouncing restaurant in the French pronunciation. It’s jaring and pretentious.

Off topic, but I once had a boss who was of a certain vintage and vair vair posh who would say 'an otel' without the 'h'.

Pinkissmart · 08/10/2026 18:15

Oh my god, I just read a book where everyone ‘pads’. Even when they should ‘creep’ or even ‘tiptoe’ .

DoubleBusy2026 · 08/10/2026 18:23

I was filling in my child’s DLA renewal form recently to find it used the word ‘gotten’ ffs! DWP!

When I read the thread title, I thought of the word "pad." Yes, very annoying.

I also don't like it when a man holds a woman's chin and looks into her eyes. Happens in movies, too. But I have never seen or experienced this in real life.

It's just weird, stop it please!

I read one of those, about the same time as this was posted, last night

(He) grabbed her chin, tilting her face up toward his "Well it was fun for a while."

Do you think they're writing it hoping it will be made into a Hollywood film?

I was reading a book recently where all the characters "slurped" their drinks.
I hate eating noises, the book didn't get finished.

Not Butter or Hooked by any chance? Awful eating imagery.

I hope she head butted him!

Not to mention the relentless namechecking of Stephen King’s It in Serenity Falls. We GET it, it’s a homage! We don’t need it spelling out in every chapter.
Also, the crashing editorial fail of tale/tail in it.
Still quite enjoyed it though Grin

Now I want to read some Paddington! I loved Olga da Polga as a kid, but only watched the TV programme of Paddington.
Never too old.Grin

Oh you must! They’re so funny. I think he also says things ‘hotly’ and ‘darkly’. It’s quite apt for a little bear though and conjures up thoughts of him having a growly, low voice and lots of fur. I also loved ‘Olga’.

Also characters with 'unruly curls' that 'escape' from their bun or pony tail or whatever.
I also hate the word 'atop' as in 'she placed it atop the desk'. So irritating, it isn't a word I've ever heard anyone say in real life.

I had to stop trying to listen to audio books becaues too often the words didn't match the narrator. eg

'"I'm sorry I'm such a terrible mother" she said softly.' But the narrator has bellowed it.

Infuriating.

The pad thing also jars for me, but mostly because I can't work out exactly what it is. when do you pad? I can maybe sort of imagine it in a room with very thick carpet and bare feet? MAYBE?

Yes!
I listened to a romance novel recently and the female narrator did the female and male conversation. Then it got to slightly steamy parts and it shuts did not sound right at all!

I also hate things like 'grab a coffee' and (in the context of Zoom etc) 'jump on/off a call'. Why is everyone in such a hurry?!?

This is quite minor but Rose Tremain has a habit of using 'this' and 'these' in a way that annoys me: things like 'She picked up the tea things and took these'. It recurs in all her novels and I do a lot of gritting my teeth!

Tbf mnetters are forever flinging, chucking, shoving and hurling things in to their ovens/air fryers/ microwaves to prove how easy and quick their meals are

HouseFullOfChaos · 08/10/2026 19:47

I had to give up on a book because they'd replaced every because with as.

She went to the fridge as she was hungry. She pushed hard on the door as the hinges were stiff. I boiled the kettle as I wanted a cup of tea. My alarm woke me this morning as I forgot to turn it off last night etc

They're not the real examples, it was a few years ago now. I gave up after about 10% of the book as because it was so annoying.

If I read any book that has the word sumptuous in it is immediately closed

Modern usage stole intercourse and ejaculate, probably other useful words as well. Ejaculatory prayer will find it hard to come back into fashion.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ejaculatory_prayer

People in Jane Austen novels make love to each other all over the place and in public too!
Of course making love has now passed well out of favour as slang for sex thank goodness so use in a book dates it just as much as the Austen usage.

heymammy · 08/10/2026 20:21

Sunbringer · 07/10/2026 22:40

It must be because I was listening to Anne of Green Gables and they too ‘ejaculate’. When it happened a second time I said ‘ejaculate?’ And DH said ‘I’m glad you brought that up they’ve been ejaculating for a few chapters now.’

We dissolved in giggles I’m afraid.

We are all still 12 years old at heart 🤣

Unless it’s a sexy smirk which also exists

From someone who's over confident and has a "look" in their eye <sigh>

mixingplaydoh · 08/10/2026 20:27

Instead of padded, Dick King Smith in his Sophie books had Sophie repeatedly “plodding”. I read the books to my DD, and every time I read out “plodded”, for some unknown reason DD and I had to elbow each other. Some nights I had very sore ribs!

Sunbringer · 08/10/2026 20:39

hugoagogo · 08/10/2026 13:31

In the Harry Potter books, characters are often described as saying things "thickly" when they are eating or upset.
It drives me around the bend!

I don’t see this an an issue. It implies their voice is muffled and sounds like their mouth is full of something whether that’s food or emotion.

heymammy · 08/10/2026 20:43

SoggyTissue · 08/10/2026 17:23

Is it good? I bought a copy years ago and my useless ex boyfriend took it and lost it. Worth me buying again?

I loved it tbh, it's an easy read and it's made me want to read his other books.

It's quite adventurous and I know that the early section in Malay is based loosely on real events.

Oh...and there's lots of ejaculating obvs.

MadMAGA · 08/10/2026 20:49

Throne of Glass: "incarnate" is used generously and incorrectly. It's very distracting.

People might say it but I wouldnt expect to see it in anything published unless it was in the context of someone not speaking quite correctly or were American

Cheeseplantalltheway · 08/10/2026 21:21

@BrandiedAromatics Who knows!

Actually the more I think about it, the more annoying it is. It's like an adult forcing a child to make eye contact when they don't want to.
Like some kind of dominance thing.

What was the book? Just checking so I don't make the mistake of reading it ( or watching any movie based on it!).
