I have 2 credits that I need to use up before my subscription expires - what shall I get? I like crime (Ann Cleeves, Barbara Vine, Scandi noir but not with detailed violence), authors like Kate Atkinson (already got her new one in hardback), intelligent books by or about interesting women. Also historical novels such as The Song of Achilles or Wolf Hall. Hit me with some must-haves please 🙏.

I am revisiting Jilly cooper. They’re surprisingly good as audiobooks, and easy to dip in and out of.

I'm currently listening to The Son-in-Law by Charity Norman. It's very well written and has an intelligent storyline that begins with a women being killed by her husband with the children present, but then sort of turns that on its head as it picks up the threads 3 years later. I'm really enjoying it.

I’ve just listened to The Hiding place by Corrie Ten Boom. On of the most beautiful and moving things I’ve ever heard

TheGoodEnoughWife · 06/10/2026 20:37

The Lake House is a great story read absolutely beautifully by Meryl Streep.

The Correspondent is a great listen.

Non-fiction, but I’ve just finished Ask Not by Maureen Callahan. Eye opening history of the Kennedys and their treatment of women. Found it fascinating (and depressing).

Do you like non fiction?
I am currently listening to Mary Berry’s autobiography A Slice of Life which is excellent.
Would also recommend Lady Anne Glenconner’s Lady in Waiting. Both fascinating slices of history.

Fictionwise, the truly wonderful Cazalet Chronicles series starting with The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard.

The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgson Burnett is fabulously entertaining as is The Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield.

Then there is the best (and longest) historical saga I have ever read which is The Morland Dynasty starting with The Founding by Cynthia Harrod Eagles.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 06/10/2026 20:50

Apologies, Mary Berry's autobiography is A Recipe for Life not A Slice of Life!
Although it wouldn't have been a bad name for it.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is excellent and has the best audiobook narrator I have ever heard and I must have listened to hundreds by now!

MiddleAgedButterfly · 06/10/2026 22:20

Some of the Ruth Jones books are great on Audible.

Mathleticsathlete · 06/10/2026 22:40

If you like crime and the authors you mentioned try JD Kirk. His DCI Logan novels based in the highlands are brilliant. Not too much violence, good plots and a lot of humour. Start with the first though (A Litter of Bones) as they follow a time line. Warning though, you might get addicted and have to buy more credits!

Land by Maggie O’Farrell is a historical book set in Ireland and it’s so well written with lovely lilting narration.

John of John by Douglas Stuart is set on the Isle of Harris and was so good I couldn’t stop listening and was then sad when it ended.

Thanks for these recommendations- not the OP but I’ve bookmarked a few on my Audible wish list.

Every episode of Cabin Pressure - Radio 4 comedy with Stephanie Cole and Benedict Cumberbatch - is on Audible. One series = 1 credit. There are 5 series. Brilliant writing and acting.

Invisible Women - Caroline Carado Perez
it’s all about the unseen, unrealised misogyny in the world.

Ophy83 · Yesterday 19:52

The Anthony Horowitz Hawthorn series - good stories and narration. And I am currently on book 4 of the full cast Harry Potter series, it's really well done. I happily do housework while listening!

Anneta · Yesterday 20:01

For historical novels, The Circle of Days by Ken Follett or Gentleman Jack by Sally Wainwright & Ann Choma or my all time favourite The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

Currently listening to Michael Douglas, One Helluva Ride' just Incase you've been holidaying on Mars and missed the publicity 😁
I'm there just for all the sex he has

You can get the entire BBC set of George Smiley John le Carré adaptations for one credit. They are so beautifully done.

Justonemorecoffeeplease · Yesterday 21:25

Treachery of Spies by Manda Scott is fab.

Keepingongoing · Today 08:44

Highly recommend 2 historical novels set in World War 1 and after - My dear I wanted to tell you, and the sequel, The Heroes’ Welcome. They are by Louisa Young (who’s just published the sequel to the Cazalet series) and are beautifully read by the actor Dan Stevens.

Also for the ‘about intelligent women’ theme, I wonder if you’d enjoy American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld?
