I have so so many thoughts.

Dear Hugh, a bit of a stick in the mud but also a good man. RIP, I was sad.

I'm so happpppy Louise has a good job and is bossing it.

I really liked Rupert previously in spite of him being weak and selfish but his weakness and selfishness really comes to the forefront in this one!

Overall I liked it but it felt quite ‘thin’ in places.
Thought she did a good job of making the Neville and Juliet storyline into something believable. Although Neville being a virgin is a direct contradiction to the last book.
I had recently listened to all the others again so found I was spotting errors that did irritate.
Villy never having a job for example - she worked in an office for a charity after her dancing school with Zoe failed. And she was always yearning for a job.

I felt she broke ranks with characters - Jemima particularly seemed pathetic and I couldn’t believe she would abandon her career of Laura like that. Zoe also rankled.

Care not career

I have just finished. Generally I loved it - it was so nice to revisit the characters again. However like others I did spot a few errors - for example at one point Zoe says she and Rupert have been married for 22 years but actually by that point it would have been about 30.

I would also have liked to see more of some characters - Villy for example.

It was very strange seeing the characters behaving in more modern ways - although it felt true to the time in some cases it didn’t feel quite right for the characters in my head, but that’s because in my head they’re still all in the 1930s/1940s (yes I do know the last EJH book moved into the 1950s).

I kept thinking Sebastian was going to appear - there were several references to him throughout the book which felt like we were being primed for something, but no. Probably a future book.

I did like the reference to Georgie watching Peter Scott on television (for those who don’t know, Peter Scott was a conservationist but he was also EJH’s first husband. She left him and their young daughter after a few years of marriage).
