Recommendations for year 9 dd

Dd is starting Year 9 and will be turning 14 in October.

I’d love to hear what your DD liked/ likes to read at around that age.

Dd enjoys a wide variety, especially spies, crime and coming-of-age stories, but isn’t really into dystopian books such as The Hunger Games or Noughts & Crosses.

Would love any recommendations. Thank you!

Golden-age detective fiction, especially Dorothy L. Sayers.
Philip Pullman, especially His Dark Materials and the Sally Lockhart books.
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.
Other modern fantasy - Corbenic (Catherine Fisher) and Fire and Hemlock (Diana Wynne-Jones).

Lots of my students around that age enjoy the modern Greek myth retellings (Pat Barker, Madeline Miller and Natalie Haynes), so you could see if they might be of interest too.

I enjoyed Robert Harris at that age - they might appeal if she is interested in spy/thriller-type books.

Lottie brooks series. Mine absolutely laughed her head off at every book!

Dd has read them all but thinks they are a bit young now.

Has she read any Louise Rennison books? My girls loved them.
