Just finished reading this and I noticed something and wanted to ask if I was on the right track.
did Mrs Wilkins notice or suspect that Frederick had not come because of Rose initially and that is why she quickly introduced him to Lady Caroline as Rose’s husband?
The reason I ask is because there are a few mentions of her penetrating stares at Frederick before Caroline turns up. And I went back a few pages, and Mrs Wilkins says to rose “your husband will be here tomorrow evening at the quickest if he leaves straight away” so perhaps the fact that he turned up that very day alerted her.
