Just finished reading this and I noticed something and wanted to ask if I was on the right track.

did Mrs Wilkins notice or suspect that Frederick had not come because of Rose initially and that is why she quickly introduced him to Lady Caroline as Rose’s husband?

The reason I ask is because there are a few mentions of her penetrating stares at Frederick before Caroline turns up. And I went back a few pages, and Mrs Wilkins says to rose “your husband will be here tomorrow evening at the quickest if he leaves straight away” so perhaps the fact that he turned up that very day alerted her.

Sorry, I can't remember the details, read a long while ago. It's a lovely book. There is also a film of it, you can get a DVD, and it's absolutely wonderful.

I loved the beginning and maybe first third. By the end I found it a bit insipid and irritable.

The film is one of my absolute favourites.
