Hi,

Looking for recommendations for a crime/thriller/procedural series. I do much prefer a series to standalone books - the longer the better!

I have read and enjoyed the following:

  • Jeffery Deaver - Lincoln Rhyme
  • Tess Gerritson - Rizzoli and Isles
  • Sue Grafton - Kinsey Millhone
  • J D Robb - In Death series
  • Kathy Reichs - Temperance Brennan
  • Dana Stabenow - Kate Shugak
  • Karin Slaughter - Sara Linton

I have recently tried the Scarpetta series following the advertisements of the new series but found them a bit hard going and gave up after about book six (I hated the series on Prime as well but that’s another thread!).

I don’t seem to have a British based series that I like, have tried a few but for some reason seem to prefer American/Canadian settings. No idea why!

any recommendations would be much appreciated as I’m in a bit of a reading slump and could really do with a new exciting series to get stuck into!!

thank you :)

Try Angela Marsons, her Kim Stone series is pretty good. It’s set in the Black Country and they’re pretty much all free on Kindle unlimited.

Peter James, Grace series is also pretty good, set in Brighton.

I’ve just reserved the first one in this Angela Marsons series at the library - purely because I live in the Black Country!

Anything by Michael Connelly. His Harry Bosch series is good, as is The Lincoln Lawyer although the older titles are better. Set in Los Angeles.

Yes, these are excellent. There is also a Bosch and Ballard spin off.

Tipsowner · 28/03/2026 21:13

His other spin-off stories, the Jack McEvoy series, which twist on tech developments are probably my favourites of them all. Michael Connelly is a genius at chronicling our modern world. Sadly, he's winding down with age; he must be nearly 80.

Isabella Maldonado co wrote some books with Jeffrey Deaver from your list, and has also written her own

ToadRage · 29/03/2026 12:01

Also reccomends Scott Marian's Ben Hope series. Make sure you get the right one cos he does a vampire series too. I was so sad when he retired Ben Hope.

MW Craven's Washington Poe series. They are hilarious and everyone I've recommended them to loves them.

Steve Cavanagh is OK, and Michael Connolly's Lincoln Lawyer and Rene Ballard ones are all good.

My all time favourite is John Connolly's Charlie parker series which have a kind of supernatural under current to them. They are fantastic and I look forward to new editions.

Another good one is Canadian author Louise Penny. her Gamache books have won tons of awards and her ability is describe food is second to none, plus even the animals in the books have distinctive personalities. She is a lovely writer (just avoid the rubbish she has written with Hilary clinton. God knows what she was thinking).

Yes to MW Craven - brilliant. Love the characters, twisty stories, Cumbrian setting.

Clare Mackintosh - the DC Morgan series set in North Wales.
Val McDermid - Karen Pirie series - cold cases in Scotland.
Jo Callaghan - the Kat & Lock series - DCS Kat Frank returns to work after the death of her husband, and has to work with an AI detective.
Vaseem Khan - Malabar House series - Persis Wadia is the first female police inspector in Bombay in the 1950s.
Ellie Griffiths - the Brighton series rather than Ruth Galloway. Set in a slightly seedy 1950s Brighton.
Jussi Adler-Olsen - Dept Q series set in Denmark.
David Young - the Oberleutnant Karin Müller series set during the cold war in East Berlin in the 70s/80s.

There's so many more to suggest but the ones above are those that I've read and enjoyed over the past couple of years. I also have read the Strike series, although I hate doing so mainly because they are far too long & weigh a ton if you get them in hardback from the library! But as soon as a new one comes out I will read it.

Tree2026 · 30/03/2026 16:06

Not read the replies, so apologies if these have already been suggested.

Helen Fields - Detective Series based. Approx 7 books in series so far

Chris Carter - Detective Series based in America, murder squad. Approx 12 books so far.

M.J.Alridge - Detective Series based in Southampton. Approx 15 books so far.

I am/ or have really enjoyed all of the above, and one of the aspects that I like so much about those 3 Series above is very small chapters, so the style of writing is very suspenseful and pacey. They all have characters which are great, and their stories build well throughout the series

Tree2026 · 30/03/2026 16:15

Apologies, that Helen Fields one is missing that this is based in Edinburgh
