Hi,

Looking for recommendations for a crime/thriller/procedural series. I do much prefer a series to standalone books - the longer the better!

I have read and enjoyed the following:

  • Jeffery Deaver - Lincoln Rhyme
  • Tess Gerritson - Rizzoli and Isles
  • Sue Grafton - Kinsey Millhone
  • J D Robb - In Death series
  • Kathy Reichs - Temperance Brennan
  • Dana Stabenow - Kate Shugak
  • Karin Slaughter - Sara Linton

I have recently tried the Scarpetta series following the advertisements of the new series but found them a bit hard going and gave up after about book six (I hated the series on Prime as well but that’s another thread!).

I don’t seem to have a British based series that I like, have tried a few but for some reason seem to prefer American/Canadian settings. No idea why!

any recommendations would be much appreciated as I’m in a bit of a reading slump and could really do with a new exciting series to get stuck into!!

thank you :)

Absolutely 100 percent recommend Jane Casey”s Maeve Kerrigan series. As well as cracking thriller storylines she really develops the characters. I’m very jealous of anyone who has yet to start this series!
Also the Manon Bradshaw books by Susie Steiner. In the same vein as Jane Casey in terms of character development but sadly there are only three in the series as the author passed away.

Peter May's the Chinese series is very good. I'm just rereading them. They're about a western forensic pathologist working in China.

I am enjoying the Culver Valley series by Sophie Hannah
I have become hooked on the relationships as much as the crime .
It is based in the UK.

I second - Jo Nesbo- Harry Hole series
Jane Casey - Maeve Kerrigan series
Robert Gilbraith - Cormoran Strike series

Absolutely love the Strike series, probably my favourite series atm

Timeforatincture · 25/03/2026 14:21

Second @Tryagain26 suggestion of the Culver Valley series. Very twisty , great characters.

And yes to all those posters who have recommended Robert Galbraith's Strike books. So addictive and a cracking good read.

I adore Charlotte Vassell's Caius Beauchamp police procedural (CB is a mixed race police officer) series set in modern day London, mostly among the upper middle and upper classes. Excellent characters, biting satire and extremely funny in places. She's only written 3 so far but there's a 4th in the pipeline and we hope for more. Important to read in order. 1. The Other Half 2. The In Crowd 3. A Deadly Inheritance.

Returning to recommend, as have other PPs, Peter May -- but I like the Enzo McLeod series set in France best!

kshaw · 25/03/2026 14:43

chris carter and the detective hunter series is excellent

Tonissister · 25/03/2026 14:52

SueBlime · 25/03/2026 12:47

Belinda Bauer, not a word wasted, there is depth to the characters. A bit gruesome in places but definitely worth reading.

This is true. She is absolutely brilliant.

DamsonGoldfinch · 25/03/2026 14:56

Nikki French’s Frieda Klein series. Set in London. They’re very good.

almondfinger · 25/03/2026 15:48

On a completely different tack are the Shardlake books b CJ Sansom.
historical fiction with what I class as a hunchback Tudor PI. Absolutely brilliant.

SammyScrounge · 26/03/2026 05:58

Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books.

wyntersunbeam · 26/03/2026 06:00

James Patterson - Women's Murder Club

PippetyPoppetyPie · 26/03/2026 06:01

Agree with Angela Marsons DI Kim Stone series. Think there are 23 now, I loved them.

also JM Dalgieshs DI Tom Jansson series is good too. Set in Norfolk

theleafandnotthetree · 26/03/2026 07:46

Don't think anyone has mentioned Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford or P.D James Dalgeish series. Are they considered dated now? They are both such excellent writers that I have re-read many of their books many times, which is not really the norm with crime/thrillers.

SerpentQueen · 26/03/2026 09:32

Most of my favourites have been mentioned. I'd add Robert Crais Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series, and if you really want to get stuck in, the Dave Robicheaux series, set in Louisiana, by James Lee Burke. For a laugh, Carl Hiaasen, set in Florida.

AlexRidersButt · 26/03/2026 09:53

Yes Hiaasen is a hoot! Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum are also good fun.

I second Ian Rankin's Rebus books, and would add Sarah Dunant's Hannah Wolfe trilogy: Birthmarks, Fatlands, Under My Skin.

Dunant also wrote some great historical novels set in Renaissance Italy. Those and the Shardlakes are interesting read alongside one another.

Villanousvillans · 25/03/2026 11:59

Peter James - Roy Grace

Mark Billingham - DI Thorne

I came on to say Thorne too. I think there are about 20 or so in the series now and there were only about two that I didn't really love. So can highly recommend them @allmycagesweremental .

TheFuturesSoBright · 26/03/2026 13:12

What about Agatha Christie? I also liked lots of the previous suggestions, and I love these.
Also PD James/Barbara Vine (Ruth Rendell)

Yiayoula · 26/03/2026 13:35

Agree with Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series, also Peter May, Mark Bellingham and Chris Brookmyre.
Nicci French, especially the excellent Frieda Klein series but she’s written quite a few good standalones.

There’s a thread running through the Roy Grace series that became ( at least to me ) VERY tedious in the later books.
Likewise Ruth Galloway - hated the “mystic” elements.

Surprised no mentions for the Dublin Murder Club series by Tana French.

Thanks everyone for recommendations, quite a few I would like to try.

allmycagesweremental · 26/03/2026 13:36

Thank you so much for these recommendations. I have now made a (very) long list to work through and see which ones appeal to me. Thank you!!
