Hi,

Looking for recommendations for a crime/thriller/procedural series. I do much prefer a series to standalone books - the longer the better!

I have read and enjoyed the following:

  • Jeffery Deaver - Lincoln Rhyme
  • Tess Gerritson - Rizzoli and Isles
  • Sue Grafton - Kinsey Millhone
  • J D Robb - In Death series
  • Kathy Reichs - Temperance Brennan
  • Dana Stabenow - Kate Shugak
  • Karin Slaughter - Sara Linton

I have recently tried the Scarpetta series following the advertisements of the new series but found them a bit hard going and gave up after about book six (I hated the series on Prime as well but that’s another thread!).

I don’t seem to have a British based series that I like, have tried a few but for some reason seem to prefer American/Canadian settings. No idea why!

any recommendations would be much appreciated as I’m in a bit of a reading slump and could really do with a new exciting series to get stuck into!!

thank you :)

Couple of US ones:

Joseph Wambaugh - Hollywood Station series

James Ellroy - Lloyd Hopkins books. There are only three, so I don't know if it counts as a series or not.

What about a bit of Val McDermid? I particularly like the Karen Pirie and Allie Burns series.

Tipsowner · 25/03/2026 11:39

Peter Grainger's DC Smith/King's Lake series. Fifteen titles so far, all excellent and not formulaic. However, only available on Kindle right now but he has a real paper publishing deal starting in June.

Tipsowner · 25/03/2026 11:40

My other suggestion is Quentin Jardine, who is Scottish. There are about 30 titles in that series.

Tipsowner · 25/03/2026 11:42

Second Val McDermid, and adding Susan Hill's Serraillier stories, plus MW Craven. Dick Francis is reliable if you like horses and racing.

Tipsowner · 25/03/2026 11:44

Anything by Michael Connelly. His Harry Bosch series is good, as is The Lincoln Lawyer although the older titles are better. Set in Los Angeles.

CharlotteRumpling · 25/03/2026 11:45

Donna Leon's Commisariat Brunell series set in Venice.

beguilingeyes · 25/03/2026 11:46

The Prey series by John Sandford. They're incredible and there are dozens of them.

WonkyMirror · 25/03/2026 11:46

Try Angela Marsons, her Kim Stone series is pretty good. It’s set in the Black Country and they’re pretty much all free on Kindle unlimited.

Peter James, Grace series is also pretty good, set in Brighton.

Sorry about saying ‘pretty’ so many times, lol

I find Val McDermid too grim.

If you like Sue Grafton, you could try Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski series.

If you like cosier procedurals, Ann Cleeve's Perez or Vera novels, or the very cosy Canadian Inspector Gamache series.

Imo, nothing beats Sue Grafton. I just want a similar heroine, similar prose style and andless mysteries.

Jo Nesbo- Harry Hole series are good

allmycagesweremental · 25/03/2026 11:50

Wow! Amazing and very quick responses! Thank you all very much and I will look into all of these titles. Thanks :)

One of my favourite series along with Michael Connelly books. These are my go to authors when at the library.

The Detective Lottie Parker series by Deirdre Gibey is great, Irish Detective series about 14 books.

Also love the Josie Quinn books by Lisa Regan, American and about 24 books.

AAudreyHorne · 25/03/2026 11:52

Tim Weaver and his David Raker series are well worth a read.
Depending on how gruesome you can bear, Mo Hayder and the Jack Caffrey books are incredible. But read in order or you will spoil bits for yourself.

I really enjoyed the Mo Hayder series too but they were indeed quite gruesome and harrowing, and it takes a lot for me to say that!

Villanousvillans · 25/03/2026 11:59

Peter James - Roy Grace

Mark Billingham - DI Thorne

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/03/2026 12:04

Lynda La Plante wrote the Prime Suspect series which I enjoyed reading - good insight into female police officers in the 80s too.

Ive also quite liked a couple of authors on kindle unlimited. Jack Gatlands Declan Walsh series was a good, unchallenging read.

IsItAllMenopause · 25/03/2026 12:09

C J Box Joe Pickett series

Ophy83 · 25/03/2026 12:11

Steve Cavanagh's Eddie Flynn series - US courtroom drama combined with investigation

Or in Scotland, Helen Field's DI Callanach series (if you are happy for things to get quite dark and gruesome in places)

Very, very thorough Reddit post on UK crime and mystery novels.

Have you tried urban fantasy combined with mystery, things like the Dresden Files, or Rivers of London series?

For just UK crime/thriller, I’ve loved: the Cormorant Strike series, the Slough House series, and… I can’t remember what it’s called but a police investigator in Scotland.

Manchestermummax3 · 25/03/2026 12:26

Steve Cavanagh - Eddie Flynn series.
Very much like Law & Order if you watched it?
Great series!

RegimentalSturgeon · 25/03/2026 12:35

Harry Bingham’s Fiona Griffiths series is a bit out of the ordinary.
