Lost without my audiobooks !

OnAWingannaprayer · 20/03/2026 08:28

Oh sigh 😞 Audible has been unusable for dayyys - am lost without my nightly listening! They say they're trying to fix the glitch but it's been days now 🤷🏽‍♀️

And also, literally just after I finally decided to pay £89 for an upgrade, so that I could download lots of books prior to a long drive on this coming Sunday. Sod's law.

Does your local library have Libby or Borrowbox?

Divebar2021 · 20/03/2026 08:31

i use Audible( no problems for me with mine) but I also have a BorrowBox app. It probably won’t have the same options as Audible but enough for your trip on Sunday. You need a current library membership to access.

PembeGreyfurt · 20/03/2026 08:32

Is there any chance Audible will work again before your drive? Any possibility of escalating with their customer service?

If you have Spotify, they have some free audiobooks.

Apart from this, there are sometimes full audiobooks on YouTube, but you need to be connected.

I feel your pain

GloiredeDijon · 20/03/2026 08:36

Mine is fine. In fact I have it on right now so I presume you mean there is some problem with your membership or compatibility?

I agree I would be lost without it and constantly have a book quietly playing as background because I don’t like total silence.

Can some BBC sounds podcasts or dramatisations keep you going whilst you wait for it to be sorted?

EasterlyDirection · 20/03/2026 08:36

Oh how annoying. I use Borrowbox occasionally but selection/availability is so poor and it's no use when driving as the back button on my steering wheel takes me back a whole chapter instead of 15 or 30s when you miss a bit as I do frequently.

DinoLil · 20/03/2026 09:05

I also use Borrowbox but have given up for now as it's all rubbish. BBC Sounds has sucked me in, there are some great podcasts on there.

mazedasamarchhare · 20/03/2026 09:36

do you have kindle? I have quite a few books with audible narration (basically it is audible, but you can play the books in the kindle app). iBooks have some free audiobooks and sometimes have good deals on. Libby is a good app if your library use it, or they may use Borrow Box (which personally I don’t like, as books never seem to be available). BBC sounds, or if your car is older and has a cd player, checkout your local charity shop for audiobooks on CD. If your car uses an aux input, have a look on eBay for ‘play away’ audio books (dinky little units which have a preloaded book on them).

TheDandyLion · 20/03/2026 09:48

I find xigxag much better than audible. No subscription and the fees get cheaper the more you borrow.

Talipesmum · 20/03/2026 09:55

Oh no this is horrendous! Must be a glitch with your account I guess?

Can you open a new account with the free trial on a different email, and use that to download something to keep you going? Can you log into your account at all? If you can log in but not listen you could set up a child account and share some books (unlikely if your account is glitching but thought I’d mention in case).

CheeseNPickle3 · 20/03/2026 09:59

I think I have the same problem using the Audible skill on Alexa. It just doesn't work in my profile and I get an error message. Husband's works fine and mine works fine directly on my phone or computer.

I've see errors reported, so they're aware of the problem.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 20/03/2026 10:02

There are free ones to be found on Youtube! I've been enjoying some retro 'Out of print' ones, mostly ones I had as a child in the 90s, on this channel:

Totally legal as they're no longer in circulation.

You can get one audiobook a month free with Amazon music

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 20/03/2026 18:41

XigXag is a great audiobook provider as well. Also a B-corporate, so possibly a little more ethical overall than the big A. That been said, I use both, plus the relatively dire selection on my library's Libby service.

Lelivre · 20/03/2026 18:47

BBC sounds has some great plays. I check that before buying on audible sometimes if it’s an adaptation.

franklymydearscarlett · 20/03/2026 22:19

I haven’t had any problems with Audible recently and I’ve had it on most of the day.

how about BBC Sounds? There is a great thread with recommendations, I’ll try and link it.

also, Apple Podcasts have loads of free full length books and loads of old Agatha Christie adaptions etc.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/03/2026 22:29

I use Everand. They have a 30 day free trial I think, so should get you through your holiday.

So sorry everyone! I actually forgot I'd posted this (panicked!) post 🙊 I do apologise. I kind of lost myself in my franticness 😅 ... plus long drive to Margate. I did temporarily use Spotify but really helpful to know that there are other, reliable ways of listening, thank you! I posted then disappeared - not good!
It was definitely a confirmed issue with Audible, according at the time to AI and google - as below.
It came back (after offloading the app plus deleting and reinstalling) after a day. So all good 😊
Thanks again for your input, fellow audible/spotify/kindle/other listeners ❤️
