Recommend us a book please

I’m totally over domestic noir/cosy crime. I’d love a romance. It doesn’t have to have a happy ending. In fact, my favourite recent novel was “Trespasses”.

My problem with romances is that I can see Mr Right coming by page 10. He’s normally the aloof or troubled soul.

please recommend a romance that made you think. Thank you!

You sound like you would enjoy something a bit more challenging.
How about The Safekeep by Yael van der Wooden, takes a while to get going but utterly brilliant by the end.
Also The Adversary by Michael Crummy is darkly brilliant. I found it utterly compelling. Not at all predictable! Possibly not a romance but it is about love.
Heart the Lover by Lily King is just amazing. You know from the fly leaf it is a love story but it is so much more.
Or what about something dark and funny like So Thrilled For You by Holly Borne about a baby shower that goes wrong. Again not a romance but friendship amongst women, a different kind of love.

Why not try Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It has never been bettered, even after 200+ years.

Iris Murdoch writes a lot about love. In fact, her characters are always falling madly in love with one another. I adore her. I spent the whole of last summer immersed in her books.

Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway has a very touching love story at the heart of it.
