.................ican imagine it might appeal to mns

i don't dislike it but rather one paced for me very benign i would like the novel to be as feisty as it implies the characters are

maybe i mean it is old fashioned

anyone else read it

the only thing i have a sort of empathy with is the character Ruth is my contemproary so there is starting to be a slight jolt of recognition

i just wish i liked the style of writing better

just finished it - its not the worst book I"ve read this year but I was a bit disappointed as started quite well. Its well written and in places very evocative. What i didn't like is having started off drawing some of the characters well (lorna's sense of frustration at her world, her passion with matt) the story went no where and became a bit trite... eg the pairings off for ruth and molly. The second half of book after lorna's death much more pedestrian than first.

tbh I think rosie thomas dealt better with consequences of love/grief and impact on its life in Iris and Ruby even though its not as well written.

I wouldnt rush to read another of her books despite as I said it being well written and very good in parts.
