Klaxon alarm to let you all know that the best Jane Austen adaptation, the 1995 Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds Persuasion is now on iplayer. So happy.

It's so wonderful ❤️

I rewatched recently. It’s perfect.

Yes I love this.

I've got it on DVd because years ago I started collecting the Classic Dramas Dvd collection. Some absolutely wonderful productions in the series - Vanity Fair with Nathaniel Parker was one of the standouts.

But what was evident was the more modern productions seemed to not be true to the mores of the times they were supposed to be portraying. The characters behaved in subtley more modern ways than would have been the norm at the time the works were set. And so they didn't seem as authentic. So I eventually gave up the collection without finishing it.

Natasha Little (Rachel from This Life) was Becky Sharp in that production of Vanity Fair, I remember loving that.

She is such a good actress and every time I see her I say, oh look- Rachel from This Life!

Will give it a watch. Though I was disappointed with the book!

I don't actually know This Life but she was absolutely brilliant as Becky Sharp.

I've never read Vanity Fair but I had heard that Becky was not a " nice " person. But little did I know until I saw this production exactly how outrageous she was!

She's what the world has made her, she had to learn young.

Amanda Root and Sophie Thompson were interviewed about making it in something I saw fairly recently (did BBC have an Austen season?) and AR said that one of the liberating things is that none of the cast wore makeup, which I hadn’t really noticed.

It’s perfect, I wish they’d make more adaptations like this. My partner loves it as well.

Dolamroth · 05/12/2025 07:51

Did anyone watch the Austen thing with Keeley Hawes? I cried buckets at the end.

At the time it was commented on that they used naturalistic lighting as well, all the moody candlelight was so atmospheric. It was much less glossy than other productions, even for the 90s.

At the moment they seem to have lots of classic Austen adaptations on iplayer (plus Middlemarch!), if only it wasn't December and I wasn't rushed off my feet organising stuff.
