Just finished the book. Loved it. Needed a gentle heartwarmer. Was delighted to see film available. Rushed to watch it. Was absolutely gutted from the start. It seemed to me that they missed the entire essence of the book. Now the salt path film is ruined by the other thread. Just to vent and wonder if I’m alone?

I loved the Penguin Lessons but agree the film is not the same experience. However, I enjoyed the film - I think it’s just one of those occasions to accept that they’re two different entities. I think Steve Coogan had a political story to tell and the film stands on its own merits that way. I guess it brings the background to the fore. Agree the book had a very different centre and ethos that was very lovable.

I'm another who enjoyed both but in different ways. I really enjoyed the film , but the book was much gentler and I think more subtle and obviously takes longer to read so I am glad I saw the film first. I'd recommend both as long as people know the film is very much "based on the book".

I can see your point of view. I think the fact that he saved the penguin to impress a girl ruined it from the get go. The subtlety of the politics in the book vs the film :(. I wish I could have accepted the differences but a complete no. 🐧💔

Now I think I need a thread about films that have disappointed after reading the book! The stage show of les miserables. Dreadful. The film great!
