A Mumsnet favourite; a question about

I'm always seeing St Mary's books recommended on here.

Much of it looks ideal for me. I'm interested in listening to them rather than reading.

But I'm not really into sci fi or fantasy. Although I used to enjoy as a child/young teenager.

Probably an unfair question but will I find the fantasy element irritating?

I also tend to get bothered about anachronisms.

Obviously I can just try for myself but wondered if readers could help.

I don't like anything whimsical and am picky about my humour. (Is there much humour?)

It would be nice to have a series that's gripping to get stuck into!

I bought them all but gave up around Book 8. I had issues with where she took the plot and felt it was flawed. They are the definition of easy reading though

On the question of a gripping series though OP may I suggest the Maeve Kerrigan crime series by Jane Casey starting with The Burning

Excellent I will look into Jane Casey!

The Burning is by far the weakest one so do persevere they really grow

Just found it's in my audible wish list so that's a good start!

I'm not a fantasy or sci fi reader these days, but I really enjoy St Mary's. I mainly listen to the audiobooks (don't make the mistake of buying the audible full cast play of the first book - they mess up the plot) and Zara Rahm is very good.

I agree that the middle of the series dips, but generally they are fun and generally well researched.

Thanks @Latenightreader
