I have just finished reading ‘Lily’ by this author. I absolutely loved it and this is the first book I’ve read by Rose Tremain…has anyone else read anything by her that they’d recommend?

I'd recommend Music and silence and The colour @stonkytonk11. Both extraordinary. She's a wonderful writer.

NannyR · 07/06/2025 22:59

The Colour is a brilliant book.

ThePoshUns · 07/06/2025 23:07

Rose Tremain is a fabulous writer, I she read nearly all of her books. I liked The Way I Found Her, The Road Home, Music and Silence, The Colour.
lucky you to have all these amazing books yet to read!

ThePoshUns · 07/06/2025 23:08

stonkytonk11 · 08/06/2025 07:21

There is a radio adaptation of Music and Silence available on the BBC Sounds app atm.

ThePoshUns · 08/06/2025 11:22

Oh thanks @TonTonMacouteI will have a listen of that

CrowMate · 08/06/2025 11:23

I’d second Restoration.

ThePoshUns · 08/06/2025 11:44

I love the character of Merivel and Robert Downey jnr played him a treat in the film version

fatgirlswims · 08/06/2025 15:02

The road home and lily are the two I have read.

I can still feel them lingering years later

Arrestedforit · 08/06/2025 15:21

@stonkytonk11 thank you for reminding me about an author I love!
Trespass is another good one, especially if you are off on holiday to France any day soon.

Amiable · 08/06/2025 17:06

I love Rose Tremain’s writing, and was lucky enough to meet her a few years ago at a talk she was doing about “The Road Home” - she was just how I’d imagined her - clever, deadpan sense of humour, gracious, observant and with a hint of ‘doesn’t suffer fools’.

stilldumdedumming · 08/06/2025 17:15

@Amiablethats lovely to know (how I imagine her too). I can’t believe how she can right so convincingly from such varied perspectives.

I think I read sacred country when it came out. 33 years ago and I still think about it!

Visiblyabove25 · 12/06/2025 09:06

I absolutely adore Rose Tremain. I’d definitely recommend the Road Home, but my personal favourite is The Gustav Sonata.

Visiblyabove25 · 12/06/2025 09:07

(And if you like Rose Tremain, I’d recommend Helen Dunmore too, if you haven’t read her already. Birdcage Walk is incredible)

EasternStandard · 12/06/2025 09:08

I saw her mentioned on here and just took a chance.

Have since read about six in a row. So good. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

TinselAngel · 12/06/2025 09:09

I loved the Road Home
”vodka for lubrication!”

ThePoshUns · 12/06/2025 09:32

I also liked Tracey Chevalier who writes historical novels.

Hertsmum78 · 12/06/2025 14:15

I love her! Trespass, The Road Home, The Gustav Sonata probably my favourites but it's hard to go wrong.

JudyInDisguiseWithGlasses · 18/06/2025 19:06

I remember reading The Way I Found Her as a teenager on holiday in Israel. I was captivated by it.

mimbleandlittlemy · 19/06/2025 13:03

Music and Silence, The Colour, The Gustav Sonata are my top faves, but I don't think she's written a dud.

Terpsichore · 20/06/2025 18:35

@JudyInDisguiseWithGlasses and @ThePoshUns great to find other people who love The Way I Found Her - I love it and once chose it for a book group, but nobody else could see why I was so keen on it!

ThePoshUns · 20/06/2025 23:28

Philistines!

mambojambodothetango · 21/06/2025 09:19

She's one of my favourites since I read Sacred Country - one of the most astonishing books I've read and will be especially interesting to revisit in the current trans debate. I also loved The Road Home and the Colour. Not read Music and Silence and didn't really like Trespass that much.
