I would have read it early 1990s I think.

Set in Britain, starting in 1910s. Woman with 3 (?) daughters, think her husband died. She ends up working in or possibly owning a cafe. I think northern England as they go to Bridlington and Betty’s in Harrogate I think.

She re-marries, husband has a car- this was obvs quite unusual.

One of the daughters thinks she’s very posh and marries Raymond, from a well-to-do family. He dies, possibly from measles, while training to join up in WW1. They have a little boy.

I remember really enjoying the book and read it a few times. I’d quite like to find it again. Can anyone help??

Was it a Josephine Cox one? They were set "up north".
I read a lot of Lyn Andrews and it sounds like one of her types of plots but her books were mostly set in Liverpool.
Or maybe a Maureen Lee?

I’ve had success putting random details into chat gpt. Also add details about the cover if you remember.

It sounds like a Barbara Taylor Bradford novel

Be very cautious- when I've tried this it gives me books which sound right but searching for further details reveals that the book is completely different (and no clues why chatgpt would even think it might be right) or doesn't actually exist!

I read most of those at a similar point, definitely not those! I loved those books too. Thank you for the suggestion.

Oh absolutely, but when I did it I kept saying ‘none of these’ then remembering another tiny detail, it eventually came up with the right one, something I had been trying to remember for decades!
