Do we know for certain from the beginning that Brat isn’t Patrick?

Well it’s ages since I read it but my recollection is yes, you know pretty much from the start. Loved that book.

Yes, I think so, though there is a great novel by Mary Stewart along similar lines where it turns out that the apparent pretender actually is the original person!

There’s also a very good YA novel by Jenny Valentine, written a few years back, called The Double Life of Cassiel Roadknight, which essentially uses the same plot.
