I am feeling nostalgic about this era as I was quite a young child back then. I’ve loved reading my fat mad diary which was written in this era.

Are there any books similar to this that cover this era?

From memory ‘The Line of Beauty’ is set in the 80s. Also Black Swan Green and ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’

The Line of Beauty is great, you beat me to it!

Thank you, I’ll look them up.

Nina Stibbe. Her memoir of her time as a nanny is very funny but she's written some novels too.

Tim Pears, especially In a Place of Fallen Leaves.

Just lurking for ideas…

One Day by David Nicolls

I also love What a Carve Up by Jonathan Coe but it is a satire about the 80/90s not a cosy warm fuzzy book!

At the time I remember reading Martin Amis, who I now find unbelievably bad, Iris Murdoch, P D James, Donna Tartt and J McInerney. Probably a load of forgotten trash too!

I knew Mumsnet wouldn’t let me down - I’ve bought a few of these and looking forward to reading them

I remember really enjoying Goodbye Johnny Thunders at the time, though looking at it now it seems to have really mixed reviews, people either the love it or hate it!

American Psycho- not warm and cosy tho!!

Some of the Barbara Vine books were set in the 80s iirc.

Adrian Mole - the 1st diary was published in the early 80s, Adrian is a bit older than me.

That is a blast from the past! I remember reading that and thinking I should “enjoy it” as it was I think meant to be a cool edgy book - but i vaguely remember it was a bit crap!

Yeah, that’s what some of the reviews said @Tootingbec- maybe you had to be in the right place at the right time (or possibly the wrong place at the right time!) I’ve ordered it secondhand to read it again, and I might decide the same!
