Welcome back - we now find ourselves in Paris, where we have discovered:

• the Count has unlimited resources
• apparently unlimited patience
• is being rather harsh on Mercedes
• has unmasked adultery and a rather tragic act and reunited father, mother and son, but with an incestuous twist, everyone remains in innocent ignorance
• grandparents have died, there may have been foul play
• a couple of women don't want to marry a couple of men, who in turn, also don;t want to marry them

How come Noirtier didn’t convulse and die? He also drank it as far as I can tell?

I was wondering the same.

I think the dr explained it. Something to do with low doses for his condition building up tolerance that people who are not exposed wouldn't have?

Edited to add, I don't think it was explained in this chapter, it was in an earlier one to do with the medication and the reason why Valentines maternal grandmother reacted to the 'poison' in a way that Noirtier didn't when both were exposed to the same drug/ posion.

I read this 2 years ago over the Christmas break and I couldn't put it down.
One of my all time favourites.

You will have to let me know when you've finished whether it was good to savour it, I might go back and read it one year, a chapter a day like you lot.

I have also just given in and finished the book at the weekend 😆

A chapter a day is sometimes hard, tempted to read on, but I’m reading it in French which is sometimes a challenge (though getting easier), so a chapter is often all I can manage in one go.

Same as MotherOfCatBoy. I'm reading it in French and sometimes chapters are long. Sometimes I read it in English as well. Also, I'm used to reading one chapter a day in readalongs!

Yes I remembered the count explaining about poison, but no one even asked why and I don’t recall the doctor explaining, but maybe I missed it in the high drama.
