My MIL has just lent me this and is keen to know what I think as she just can't get into it - keeps stalling around 20-30 pages in.

Anyone else read it and have an opinion before I knuckle down (after I've finished the 6 books I'm already reading that is...)?

no but had same experience as you - did about 20 pages and then put it aside..so am with you on getting other views.

Well, I'm about a third of the way through now.... I dunno. I don't think it's totally dreadful, but it does feel a bit derivative - a bit Sebastian Faulks, a bit Ondaatje in the English Patient, a dash of mis lit what with all the feral children, but none quite as good as the originals.

Still, I think I'm going to stick it out. Off to Google for reviews and see what, if anything, the papers thought.

Am stuck about 40 pages in.. not sure if it is reading it when I am tired or whether it's just not very interesting.

I think if you can get past the first section (the Peterloo massacre + introducing the other narrative strand) it begins to move a bit more. Couple of interesting comments on this site.
