Went to a book club for the first time.

I read bigly, but I'm spooked by book clubs, feeling shy, as I just don't feel I'm very articulate talking about books. But there was a meeting in an apartment complex near me, about Stacy Schiff's Cleopatra, which I adored, so I asked if I might come and just sit in a corner, as I was curious to hear their opinions.

They welcomed me very cordially, but the funny part was, no one loved it as much as I did, and several of them hadn't even finished reading it.

But they asked me to come back, though, which was nice.

@MsAmericahave a look at Chapter 25 book clubs. Usually meet in a coffee shop or similar.
You do pay a subscription, about £10 a month.
You buy the book separately, so you can get it on Kindle if you want to.

I've been in various book clubs over the years and the one thing that amazes me is how seldom books receive unanimous opinions (either on the negative or positive side).

I don't know what Chapter 25 is, but it'll be a cold day in hell that I'd pay to join an ordinary book club.

I don't mind that. What I hope for - with book and movies - that if someone disagrees with me, it will be in a smart, perceptive way that will broaden my understanding, or alert me to aspects that escaped me.

Sounds great! I always wanted to join one but it’s always too many excuses from me and no action. For now, I satisfy my need for a book community by reading reviews of the book after I finished especially the spoiler reviews. I like to see why someone may not have liked the book.
