Counting the Stars by Helen Dunmore

Anyone else having trouble with this? I have read every adult book and story that HD has written and really love her prose, but I'm really stumbling through this new one.

I think its because she's trying to be so true to the original poetry of the love story between Catullus and Codia - which is VERY detailed.

I've not got far and I'm wondering if anyone else has finished it and if they found things lightened up a bit?

Haven't read it though she is one of my fave authors- do you read Sue Gee?

It improves! I found the first few chapters hard going, as it was a blow by blow (ahem) detail of Catullus' sexual infatuation, but then matters in the real world in Rome turn more serious, so the books gets more interesting and less navel-gazing.
