What is this short story?

Many years ago I read a short story about a man being transported to his execution. I thought it was by Chekhov but can’t find it so may have misremembered that. Aware he has only minutes to live, he is entranced by every detail of the world.

Does this ring any bells at all?

Sounds like 'Invitation to a Beheading' by Nabokov

Thanks very much- that looks like a fascinating book but it’s not the story I’m looking for unfortunately, which is very short and only covers the journey to the scaffold.

What time period is it set in?

I can’t remember 100%- I think it must be 20 years since I read it- but I think revolutionary France.

None of these is set in France, but could it be:
"An occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce, set in the US Civil War, or
"The secret miracle" by Borges, set I think in WWII,
or
"Moment without time" by Joel Townsley Rogers.
