While I impatiently await the next maeve kerrigan and strike books this year please could someone recommend another series?

My requirements are not too complicated, not too dark or gory, I can handle serial killers etc but not graphic or gratuitous violence. I like a will they won't they too

I was coming on to say Maeve Kerrigan!

I suggest Ruth Galloway by Elly Griffiths starting with The Crossing Places

Peter James Roy Grace series. He has done a lot of research with our police force where the series is based (Brighton) abd is quite a frequent visitor, I've met him when he judged our Christmas cake competition. His books aren't too gory, DH (former major crime detective) enjoys them.

There is a big series of books by LJ Ross, starting with Holy Island, all with the same main characters - they are set in Northumberland and I love them.

I am also a big fan of Ann Cleeves - especially the Shetland and Vera series.

I’ve really got fed up with Maeve Kerrigan. I think the relationship aspect has completely derailed good stories and I used to love them. If they get together they won’t work together and if they don’t get together I am exhausted with the indecision.

Anna Louise weathley’s detective Dan Riley book series is great.

Lovely thanks all!

Rebus.

Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone series. I found almost the complete set in a local charity shop & I’m halfway through. They work as standalone but are better read in order.

Chasing The Dead - first in the David Raker series by Tim Weaver. Quite gritty and complex missing persons investigations. I find them really engrossing and never know where they’re going, keeping me guessing. There’s about 12 in the series now I think.

highlandcoo · 05/01/2025 21:26

Agree with Ann Cleeves.

Also Val McDermid, but only the Karen Pirie ones.

Peter May's Lewis trilogy which starts with The Black House.

Stephen Both's series set in the Peak District is also worth a look.

EmpressaurusKitty · 05/01/2025 21:30

I haven’t read the Karen Pirie ones but I was a big fan of Val McDermid’s Lindsay Gordon & Kate Brannigan serieses (is that a word?) back around the millennium.

I love the Paul Gitsham series with Warren Jones. I listened to most of them, but have read the last couple. Not an author I ever hear mentioned.

Coffee62 · 05/01/2025 21:38

JD Kirk - Scottish Highlands settings!

Really great books!

JM Dalgliesh has 3 series Hidden Norfolk (which I love), Dark Yorkshire (which I hated - started the first book but didn't finish it which is very unlike me) and a newer Misty Isle series (set on the Isle of Skye - also love this series). I have to wait very patiently for new releases......

AgathaChristmas · 05/01/2025 21:46

Frances Brody - 1 series set in 1929s Yorkshire and another in a prison in the 1960s.

Ihaveoflate · 05/01/2025 21:46

I'd also recommend Val McDermid's Karen Pirie series and her other books as well.

Tygertiger · 05/01/2025 21:46
