Who here has a kindle and how do you use it? I have a paperwhite. I've had this one since 2019 and prior to that, I had a paperwhite from 2012. I got a new one as the old one wasn't holding charge anymore.

I use mine for reading in bed as DH needs early nights and dark room for sleeping. I also take it on holiday.

I only read on it. I don't highlight things or check the meaning of words though sometimes if I've fallen asleep reading, the font size changes and random bits are highlighted 😂

I've noticed on some Bookstagram pages that people say how much they do on their kindles and how they are all keen to upgrade to the new colour one, which as far as I can see, only shows the book cover in colour and has double storage

Storage isn't an issue on my paperwhite. It can hold around 4 or 5 thousand books

Am I missing any functions that make it life changing?!

I just read on mine. I occasionally accidentally highlight things🙂. I got a new one this year and I find it much harder to navigate than my older paperwhite. I don’t see the point of colour.

Neither can I, especially at £269

I didn't know if I was missing features on mine

I quite like the idea of being able to annotate (kobo libra, which is colour too). I think that would be useful for contracts etc that were imported. Also, I go back to a book sometimes and have forgotten who a character is, so that would be helpful to scrible a reminder somewhere.

BigFatLiar · 19/10/2024 13:48

Just use the Kindle app on my phone

I think the colour ones are useful if you read comics 🤷‍♀️.

Also, if you had a non fiction nature/history etc book, it would be useful (though personally I'd read on kindle app on phone or tablet).

I can't read for long on a phone or a kindle fire tablet etc. I like the paperwhite as its back-lit and adjustable light

You can highlight on there and use the x ray function to get a synopsis or catch up of the book

I only use them for reading though, not for dealing with contracts, my laptop does my work stuff for me

I had the very first one, the one with the keyboard (which I never used), but they discontinued support for it a couple,of years ago, so you couldn't download new books. I found the original kindle easy to navigate (if a little clunky), but I was forced to get new one.
i don't like it much, I got one that had the least functions, but I find it complicated to navigate, don't like the touch screen (too sensitive). I just want to read books on my kindle, not do other things. Like I don't need 25 programmes on my washing machine.
guess I'm an old dinosaur.

I have a Paperwhite and an Oasis. I look up words and sometimes highlight and I also use the X-ray feature to look up character details.

I wouldn't buy the colour one though, if I'm that interested in a colour cover I can look on my iPad.

MonCoeur · 19/10/2024 14:55

I’ already have 2 kindles but I’m planning on upgrading to the colour version because then I can read graphic novels and arts books and stuff on there which means I can free up space buying fewer physical copies.

I've tried using my iPad for that kind of stuff but it’s harsh on the eyes, so a colour kindle it is.

Beethovensafari · 19/10/2024 15:02

I had the first gen but it gave up the ghost a few months ago. Now have the paperwhite. I only read on it, don't really know why I would want to annotate or bookmark. Like the OP it's great for reading when DH wants to go to sleep. The battery is great too on this one, lasts ages.

FlyMeToPluto · 19/10/2024 15:05

I only read on it. I use it on the commute as it's lighter and takes less space than a book. I used to use my phone but since I had/have long covid I find my eyes are a lot more sensitive to phone light and the kindle hurts it a lot less.

I also fall asleep reading most of the time - my eyesight is so poor, I make the text size really big already but I often wake up to see I've highlighted something mindless 😂

Londonnight · 19/10/2024 15:05

I too have a paperwhite and only ever read on it. I don't understand the need for book marks when the last page automatically comes up when you open it.

I bookmark things I want to go back to at some point, so it’s useful for me.

Some book reviews on Amazon have a section that shows the most highlighted parts of the book, I wonder how many were accidental highlights?!

I never take my highlighted bits off, I just leave it

Not sure how to do it but you can 😂

It's just used as a way to read a book flr me but I'm aware that the bookstsgram people who are calling them life changing are also promoting it as they received it for free!

I’d love to know how to use this x ray function which has been mentioned a few times! I read my kindle every day of my life and I’ve never stumbled across this function!

When the book is open, go to the menu and its under there. If it's greyed out, the book isn't compatible with the x ray feature

My first touchscreen kindle was stupidly sensitive, I swear a breeze would make the page turn! I know for sure a strand of hair wafted over it and made it turn, and also a fly did too. My paper white is way less sensitive and only turns to an actual touch.

CaptainSeven · 19/10/2024 21:12

I have a kids kindle paperwhite (better deal than the one aimed at adults and you can set it up for adults)

I would love a colour kindle to read graphic comics and any other book designed to be enjoyed in colour.

I might save up for one.

Can you set them up as different devices for one person and then send books to different devices?

Also kindle for work is amazing. You can send PDFs and other docs to them. Game changer for anyone needing to read a work document on a short flight.

Topseyt123 · 19/10/2024 22:37

I love my kindle, but I am perfectly happy with the paperwhite. I bought it in 2022 and it is only my second kindle - I had had one of the original versions until then and upgraded it.

Like you, I just want it to read books on really though there are some functions that I do like, such as the ability to look up stuff in the dictionary or on Wikipedia. I also like being able to read it easily in the dark and (increasingly as I am getting older 🙄) the ability to increase the size of the font.

I don't see much point in the colour version either, so I haven't got one. My paperwhite already has all the bells and whistles I really want. 😃
