The Poisonwood Bible
Demon Copperhead
The Bean Trees

in that order 🙂

Bean Trees is a nice introduction to her writing. Poisonwood Bible and Demon Copperhead are both excellent in very different ways.

Poisonwood Bible!!

The one book I gift, to as many people as possible.

Resisterance · 08/10/2024 10:10

All of them!

The Bean Tree and it's sequel Pigs in Heaven are just beautiful. Both made me weep but read voraciously. Really skilled and great stories.

watchingsmurfs · 08/10/2024 10:12

Thanks for the tip OP, I’ve just ordered The Lacuna and Pigs in Heaven. Super excited as I didn’t realise there was a follow up to The Bean Trees.

TotallyFloored · 08/10/2024 10:14

Thanks guys - I have read Demon Copperhead but I'll order the others.

I don't recommend Unsheltered. I was so disappointed in that after Demon Copperhead

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 08/10/2024 10:33

The Poisonwood Bible is incredible, so well written and both sad and life affirming

Hellohah · 08/10/2024 19:42

I have only read Demon Copperhead and really enjoyed it.
David Copperfield is one of my favourite books, and whilst it's not a patch on that - it's still pretty good :)

GrazingLamb · 08/10/2024 19:51

Flight Behaviour is great also.

Ellmau · 08/10/2024 19:53

Poisonwood Bible is brilliant. A modern classic.

I hated The Lacuna.

Bideshi · 08/10/2024 19:53

Just read The Poisonwood Bible, having resisted for several years. It's one of those books that people get evangelical about.
I am now urging everyone to read it and becoming a Poisonwood Bible bore myself. It's a compelling and moving book.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 08/10/2024 19:58

I loved Demon Copperhead but didn't like The Poisonwood Bible apart from some of the descriptions. The shifting viewpoints I found really irritating. But I'm inspired to try some others of hers.

AlwaysFreezing · 12/10/2024 09:17

My absolute favourite is prodigal summer. The lacuna was my least favourite.

Tableglass · 12/10/2024 09:40

Adored the poisonwood bible and demon copperhead but couldn’t get into the Bean trees. Maybe should try again

My absolute favourite is prodigal summer. The lacuna was my least favourite.

That’s a good novel. She manages to pull off the very difficult feat of having three different narrators, linked only tangentially, and masking each one equally interesting.

My other two favourite Kingsolver novels are her very early ones — The Bean Trees and its sequel Pigs in Heaven.

Drizzlethru · 12/10/2024 21:30

I really enjoyed The Poisonwood Bible, then immediately read Lacuna which disappointed me, which meant I have never read any others.

after this thread I might try another of her books!
