Best gritty thriller for 17 year old

Hi, can anyone recommend a great fast paced thriller type book for a teenager please?
Bonus points for having a gay love interest. Not essential but definitely don't want it to be a "gay" book.

A val mcdermid series? One of her series has the lead female detective who has a female partner.

I mean not exactly a romance -they are married. Uk based.

James Patterson instinct series, lead professor /crime solver is male, married to a man. But again that's just part of the background, not a focus.
