I've listened to his Cat Lovett series and I really like them.

I've read his Lydmouth series of police procedurals, set in the 1950s, on the Welsh borders. The first one is An Air That Kills (the titles all draw on A.E. Housman's poem, 'A Shropshire Lad.') I absolutely loved them; there's a backdrop of postwar rationing and repression with characters who are flawed but doing their best while struggling with everything the war and its aftermath has thrown at them. One of the central characters, Inspector Richard Thornhill, could have been modelled on Trevor Howard (Alec Harvey in Brief Encounter) - sad eyes and beautiful manners.

I've also read a few of his stand-alones and particularly enjoyed Bleeding Heart Square.

Thanks for responses, just listening to his gothic fireside stories atm ...he writes beautifully.
