I'm after some recommendations for some spooky autumn reads or cosy autumn / winter books while I wait for the new Patricia Cornwell book to be released.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

If you will consider short stories I enjoyed Fireside Gothic by Andrew Taylor and Three Winter Ghosts by Gary Sargent

If you haven't read them, the ghost stories of M R James.

The Whistling by Rebecca Netley. Following for more suggestions.

I have a soft spot for the tales of HP Lovecraft who is a master of weird fiction
MR James reigns supreme as has been mentioned
EF Benson is also superb, particularly the horrible Room in the Tower

check out the Classic Ghost Stories podcast by Tony Walker. He has written som super stories himself too

Just finished Haunted: Ghost stories and their afterlives by E Jay Gilbert. It’s a new release that was advertised to me on Facebook, couldn’t put it down!

I love Tony Walker. He also does classic detective stories.
I really enjoy listening to his commentary to the stories, including putting the authors and their works into a context. Also I have heard him talk about the history of ghost stories and the different traditions they draw on.

The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova

Stylish and creepy Dracula update.

Thanks everyone, there's some great recommendations here.

I love MR James and Lovecraft, I do have a few of the leather bound classics of these along with Dracula, Frankenstein etc.

I've just finished The Ghost Woods by CJ Cooke which I really enjoyed.

Short YA I just read Clockwork by Phillip Pullman with my kids. I thought it was very good.

I second Michelle Paver - she's fantastic, I have never been so afraid when reading a book. Unfortunately can't find anything else that would be similar.
