Philip Pullman Dark Matterials - new book?

I recently saw a poster advertising the new book in the Dark Materials series. I know this has been rumored for a while so we have been waiting for it with baited breath.

Now I can't seem to find it, I found one that seems to be a spin off type one, is this it? Does anyone know when the next book is coming out?

I've not heard this, but will lurk in case someone else has

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 17/04/2008 11:14

am lurking too!!

yorkishbirdy · 17/04/2008 11:16

Ok, there is Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a time in the north, but these both seem to be more supporting books than continuation of the story... what am I missing? [aggrhh]!

But it finished Frantically googling now

I didn't know that Once upon a time in the north was a supporting one, I thought it was different like Ruby in the Smoke etc... will have to go find that one now!!

Flamesparrow · 17/04/2008 12:12

Nope, the official site just lists the trilogy and lyra's oxford

yorkishbirdy · 17/04/2008 16:18

I understood that there was to be a new book following on, I can't find where I saw that now though - of course!

Apparently Once Upon a Time in the North is the story of how Iorek and thingy (name escapes me - the ballon piolet...) met when they were younger.

Boojk of Dust won't be out for a while. Once Upon a Time in the North came out recently, tis very good. Story of Lee and Iorek is fab and there are a few letters concerning Lyra in there too......

northernefugee39 · 17/04/2008 16:39

Wow, Book of Dust looks great, I hadn't heard of it, thanks Yorkish!

Indith, what's Once upon a Time in the North?

Indith · 17/04/2008 16:42

northern, as Yorkish said it is the story oh how Lee and Iorek met, in the trilogy itself we know that they have a history together but that is all. It also contains a few bits and pieces about Lyra.

northernefugee39 · 17/04/2008 16:46

Found it! IU'm so out of it, I never spot these things

here

BexieID · 17/04/2008 16:46

Ooo over all unnecessary

Will add Once Upon a Time in the North and The Book of Dust to my lengthy booklist!

The book of dust sounds funny though, as DPs name is Dust.

BexieID · 17/04/2008 16:49

Hmm, what happened? Ah, I know. Was meant to put but kinda buggered that up, lol.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 17/04/2008 21:54

Did anyone see the movie? I've not yet. Is it any good, anywhere near as good as the book?

Flamesparrow · 18/04/2008 07:59

I enjoyed the film - they reordered some of it, and it doesn't finish in the same place as northern lights, but I liked it. I was able to detatch enough from the book to enjoy it with the changes, but had the knowledge there so that I knew what was happening (you just don't "get" the horror of someone touching your daemon through the film)

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 18/04/2008 10:56

thanks for that Flamesparrow. Will be getting it to watch when it comes out. That's a shame they haven't portrayed the horror and repulsion of someone touching your daemon, that's quite a big thing really.

Ooh how exciting. I too enjoyed the film although inevitably it lacked the magic and emotion but you can't have everything. They also totally cut the killing of Roger which affects the betrayal/sacrifice theme that gives a 3rd dimension to the various baddies. Looks like Lord Asriel is just going to be a plain old goodie instead. Can't remember if there was any mention of Will's dad, can anyone else?
I love the actor that played Lee Scoresby, he's the same in every film (eg Wyatt Earp, Big Lebowski), and wouldn't be surprised if Pullman hadn't imagined him when writing it!
