Longer ago than I care to remember (25ish 🙈) years ago I read a book which I remember loving but cannot for the life of me remember the title:
It follows a woman's life from young girl through to adulthood.
She starts as a young girl in a boarding school, she's not wealthy but she makes friends with a wealthy girl who invites her to stay with her... during that stay the friend tells this girl that her father likes her to get dressed up and wear lots of make up so the main girl does down to dinner all dolled up, meanwhile the friend arrives to dinner dressed demurely and without make up...
as the girl grows up she works in a shop and a gentleman comes in and asks her to try on a pair of gloves which he then insists on buying for her..
They fall in love and get married...
He later dies in the book (I think in a horsing accident).
Her life carries on and I think she marries again but I'm not sure...
