Help to identify a novel about a Pope's death?

I've just started reading Conclave by Robert Harris and it reminded me of a novel I've previously read but I can't find it despite racking my brains and googling. It's definitely a novel, not non fiction. About a young man who is supposed to be guarding Pope John Paul I but is called away and then the Pope dies. I also seem to remember him kind of stalking /fantasising about a woman in a bar and following her home, then being found out. There are real characters from the Vatican in it too I think, and I found it really interesting and fascinating at the time. Can anyone put me out of my misery??

Bump...
I'm even wondering if it was a film rather than a book? 🤔. Don't think so though, vivid in my minds eye but as a book I'm sure...

Hadrian the Seventh by Frederick Rolfe?

It's certainly about the Vatican but, having never actually read it, I'm not sure it has the plot you describe.

I don’t think it’s this book, but there is a lot of papal stuff in it…

Earthly Powers, Anthony Burgess

It’s a history of loneliness by John Boyne I think?

I loved that book, had forgotten this was part of the story because there is so much powerful stuff in it later on…

Thanks again. And thanks for other suggestions, more to add to reading list.
