There's nothing to get

The ending really is that shit

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/07/2024 18:08

What do you not understand?

Channellingsophistication · 27/07/2024 19:09

Well I guess it didnt end like I thought.

Joy has returned and explained about the off grid getaway but felt Savannah wanted to get something off her chest.

The last chapter a girl is on a plane visiting her mother so its Savannah who has left her mother locked up with water and protein bars but then says her mother is in tennis to her co passenger on the plane. I know I’m tired having got back from a trip just now but I dont get that?

any insight would be helpful, thank you

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit Thank you. I didn’t come across that link when I was googling earlier. Odd ending really - I was expecting a bit twist!

I can’t remember the detail but I do remember the ending being really disappointing, contrived and far fetched.

FakingItEasy · 27/07/2024 19:52

I've literally just finished this 10 minutes ago! Basically I think she's saying Joy is the mother she really wanted.

I, however, wanted to know if her actual mother dies in the room or managed to survive ok the protein bars.

I love Liane Moriarty usually, but I was a bit disappointed in the ending of this one.

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/07/2024 19:56

Yeh it’s mostly just a bit of an odd ending. Liane Moriarty was always great but her last few books have got a bit odd. Like she’s trying to be clever but it’s sure quite what to do

I read this on a long haul flight and one of the cabin crew said 'oh definitely not her best' - she wasn't wrong. And the other one about strangers in the retreat. I loved her earlier books 'the husband's secret' and 'what alive forgot' plus a couple of others whose names escape me but there have been some right duffers recently (in my opinion)

EasterlyDirections · 27/07/2024 23:26

I almost lost the will to live reading it, it was far too long and the characters were not engaging.

Yes 9 Perfect Strangers is one of the worst books I have ever read. It just becomes more and more implausible.

I will try The Hisband’s secret - I haven’t read Big little lies but loved the Netflix series which is why I picked up Apples Never Fall in the first place.

Big Little Lies & The Husband's Secret are both a million times better.

pastapestoparmesan · 28/07/2024 10:24

Her first and least known book is by far the best one imo. I think it’s called Three Wishes - can’t be bothered to go upstairs to check! It’s the one about triplets.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/07/2024 10:34

Three wishes is wonderful! I’ve tried several times to read Apples but struggled. I won’t rush back having seen this thread. I’d love to watch the tv series of Apples as it stars Annette Benningbut it doesn’t seem to be available in the U.K.

piefacedClique · 28/07/2024 10:34

I really struggled with the book. I listened to it on Audible. The series was better and filled in the bits I missed when listening and couldn’t be arsed to go back and re listen to to try and understand. Love her other books tho. I agree it’s not her best!

PetShopGals · 28/07/2024 10:37

I've just read Three Wishes and also Truly Madly Guilty. Both better than Apples never fall.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 13/08/2024 05:34

My favourite book of hers is her second one, "The Last Anniversary". I agree I haven't enjoyed her last few.
