Trying to remember a book

Been googling on and off all day trying to find a book I once read but no luck... Hopefully someone here will have some ideas.
I read it about 15+ years ago
Set mainly in Australia, British woman goes travelling, makes a friend, friend has a baby, friend dies and she keeps the baby. Returns to UK with "her" baby. Baby was called Red due to hair colour.
Might have been a Richard and Judy one?
