I've just finished Absolution and I loved it. It's about American wives in Vietnam in the early 60s. I was wondering if anybody else has read it.

No, but glad to be reminded there’s an Alice McDermott I haven’t read. I think she’s an astonishing novelist. Charming Billy or At Weddings and Wakes or Child of My Heart are my favourites.

Her writing is so evocative. Child of my Heart would have been my favourite book of hers until today, but Absolution is even better. I spent all weekend reading it. It's very character driven but it's also set in a really interesting time and place. I know it will stay with me.

Yes! I’ve just come back from Vietnam and a Canadian gave it to me. Loved it. Have you read Dust Child?
