I've just re-read this, and it's every bit as good as the first time.

I swear, I've had a friend like Caitlin and have been to similar beaches. It's so atmospheric, and delightful.

Judy Blume wrote a few adult novels. 'Smart Women' & 'Wifey' were both excellent- but this is her best. Love it love it.

If you like Judy's books but haven't read his - please do!

Thank you for the recommendation. I really enjoyed this. It's made me want to go to Martha's Vineyard! And made me want to be young again.

I really enjoyed it, so much more than Wifey! Have you read In the Unlikely Event?

Dustyblue · 10/05/2024 04:26

Didn't really enjoy In the Unlikely Event. It was ok but not one I'd read again, unlike most of her books.

I just finished this too! I did like it - some of it was quite surprising though.
On to smart women next 😊

I liked the way JB gives a voice to each character in chapters in Summer Sisters. And I liked every one of them- even nasty Grandmother Somers.

Smart Women is good, think I'll re-read that next. Wifey was before it's time, and I loved that parents used to buy it accidently thinking "Oh Judy Blume, she's that popular children's author". 😳

Can we discuss the ending? Spoiler Alert

Did Caitlin kill herself, by sailing a small boat out to sea even though she was an experienced sailor? Or did she deliberately fake her death, as an experienced sailor, and went off into the future to cut her ties with Vix, Lamb, Abby, Sharkey etc.

It's a vexing & delicious ending.

I thought it was an accident! But very open ending I agree!

Dustyblue · 02/06/2024 13:22

That's just it! She told Vix earlier that she'd rather be dead than be ordinary. So she went out for a sail...

There was a bloody sequel in this!

I also want to know what the ending was supposed to be, or if it was to be left to reader interpretation.

I love the description of the house and how everything if a bit messy and beachy. This thread makes me want to go and read it again.
