Am re reading this for book group - anyone else like it ? I did...

i really liked this. it's set where i live (the author lives locally) & i recognised many local bits. it was fun to read. and poignant too. i have read her recently published earlier novel too which i enjoyed.

yes, thought I might order that one - it was a really easy and pleasant read .

she seems to have had a very interesting life. chinese-english dictionary was on radio 4 recently too, though i only heard the 1st episode. worked quite well i thought.

just found a publisher's discussion thing so I can base my questions for the group on it (Random House)

well everyone seems to have a list of questons when it's their book up for discussion - wanted to be prepared !

I enjoyed it, but was fairly put off by the bits where she is describing how much she loves being shagged by the middle aged loser. I could almost feel the heavy breathing of all the men who would be buying the book (attracted by the nude on the cover) and fantasizing about young Chinese students begging for it. Bleughh.
Loved the romantic ending though, with them both thinking about each other on opposite sides of the world.

the bit i pmsl about was about avoidingbuying condoms from the costcutter on hackney road as it's staffed by scary men - she has that bit absolutely right!
