Or psychological thriller?

Find Us by Benjamin Stevenson - it was on the Audible Plus catalogue and I listened to it
David Jackson - especially Don't Make a Sound (Not to be confused with other authors of the same name!)
Not really a thriller but I was absolutely engrossed by the audiobook of Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

platinumplus · 06/02/2024 14:41

@Hellohah Oh dear - truly awful as in badly written or you just didn't enjoy it?

Can you say what books you have enjoyed so I can see if we are on the same page (pun not intended!)

I've just started eye for an eye and it looks promising.

chickenpieandchips · 06/02/2024 14:50

JP Delaney books are sometimes good. Paying nicely is great, and the new wife was good, but the girl before was a bit bonkers. Claire mckintosh DC Morgan books were both worth reading.

BinkyBeaufort · 06/02/2024 17:09

I'm glad someone mentioned A Dark Adapted Eye by Barbara Vine.
I read about 50-60 books a year, mostly thrillers/crime/whodunnits, and it's my absolute favourite. In fact anything by her is well worth reading. IMHO she's never been bettered.

efeslight · 06/02/2024 17:31

Joining in to place mark, also ability Fan of Ruth Rendell and Barbara Vine

Movinghouseatlast · 06/02/2024 17:35

A Fatal Inversion by Barbara Vine. In fact anything by Barbara Vine.

Edited

Just read this and thought it was awful. Cliched, poorly written, shallow story, no depth in any aspect. Really poor stuff.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/02/2024 20:00

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. If you don't know, it's one of the most famous twists in literature. Worth it if you don't (and if you do, frankly)

Hellohah · 06/02/2024 20:13

@platinumplus I hated everything about it, it tried so hard to be whacky but it was just weird and I found the writing hard going. It made me feel dirty. Hard to describe.

Mystery/Thriller wise - Rebecca, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I guess this is a mystery type book), The Moonstone, Agatha Christie, I've enjoyed the Tana French books. I like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, love Sherlock Holmes. Enjoyed the CJ Sansom Shardlake series, Louise Penny (Armand Gamache), I like Ann Cleeves, the Strike books, Ruth Ware, Elly Griffiths.

I read Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and those type of books, which I enjoyed but sometimes feel they become a bit ridiculous in the end, if you know what I mean? Maybe The Last House on Needless Street was just too ridiculous for me.

Just listened to The Woman in White on BBC Sounds. A great yarn and I was gripped but I just wanted to kick everyone in it up the arse in the first part for being so naïve and stupid, or for failing to do obvious things and for what was inevitably going to happen in the next part. Very much of its time.

Every book by Donato Carrisi. They twist and turn so many times, are often deeply disturbing, and I absolutely CANNOT put one down.

I do enjoy his books, but get annoyed by the way he links one group of them together. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoilers but I wish he'd conclude one specific storyline once and for all.

Well, that's me told then Blush

I'm clearly not as well read or literary as you are.

Are you an English lit graduate or teacher?

mrskimsneakattack · 07/02/2024 15:59

I'm re-reading A Quiet Belief in Angels at the minute, it's so good. I'd recommend most of RJ Ellory's books.

Also a fan of Sharon Bolton and Mo Hayder's books, although MH can be quite disturbing!

Citrusandginger · 07/02/2024 19:08

Val McDermid - A place of execution is sublime.
I'm also a big Ruth Rendall / Barbara Vine fan.
I like Anthony Horowitz, as a good yarn, but his books aren't gripping in the same way.
Like PP, I'm after I really didn't get on with Richard Cole and am unlikely entry book two.

SecondUsername4me · 07/02/2024 19:11

The Housemaid is a brilliant read, proper page Turner.

platinumplus · 08/02/2024 10:24

I've started reading The Last House On Needless Street - I'll get back to you all when I've finished and see whose views I align with 😄

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters is fantastic.

beguilingeyes · 08/02/2024 10:47

A Kiss Before Dying by Ira Levin. Any Ira Levin really. The Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby are amazing ('He has his father's eyes')
A Kiss Before Dying has an amazing twist half way through.

Moier · 08/02/2024 16:14

Jess Ryder.. if you watched The first Wife. All her books are brilliant.

This sounds good.

I've not read the other two books but have seen the film of Rosemary's Baby and enjoyed.

So I've just finished The Last House on Needless St - didn't love it. Didn't hate it either but I found it so confusing and not in a good way. So back to the drawing board for me!
