Authors you have discovered recently.

Just wondering ,in need of inspiration.

Have recently discovered Val McDermid, the first wire in the blood book was very enjoyable. Also Christopher Fowler, picked up Disturbia in a charity shop and loved it, will be keeping my eye out for his work in future. Also picked up a couple of John Connelly books on recommendation of a mumsnetter on a different thread (think it was Kerrymum), that was really good, just up my street.

Anybody made any intriguing finds?

Karin Slaughter, Tess Gerritsen (from 'The surgeon onwards),possibly Caleb Carr 'The Alienist' and 'The Angel of Darkness'.

Ooops. Not ones I've discovered recently, but authors who write similar books to V.M and J.C.

Martina cole is good, and Katy Reichs similar style to VM there is another authour to but i cant remember her name at the moment and Im to lazy to walk upstairs and look

also read all of Dan Browns books recently they are good

Hi, I am a new member so apologies if I am butting in or anything but I have just read a series of books by Boris Akunin set in Russia in the 1800's about a character called Erast Fandorin. I am aware that my description so far doesn't make it sound too appealing but they were really fantastic stories. Its translated from the Russian so the language is really interesting but the most important is that the stories are exciting and move at a fast pace. I would highly recommend the first one, The Winter Queen.

In addition to my previous message if you are a book lover you might enjoy the Jasper Fforde books, starting with the Eyre Affair. This is one series of books I really hope they never try and turn in to a film or tv series, it just wouldn't work!

I haven't read A Place of Greater Safety, noscat, but will do. Have you read Fludd? This is one of my favourite books at the moment.

Hi IorekB - yes, I have read Fludd & enjoyed it - the only one that I've read of hers so far & didn't like was Every Day is Mother's Day. Nasty! Beyond Black is weird but again very readable.

James Patterson - gripping

I love crime books, but I often feel a bit sick & slightly guilty after I've read them, like I've eaten too many sweets. I rarely buy them, just take them out of the library cos I don't really want them on my shelves! Anyone else feel like that? I can recommend the Phil Rickman Merrily Watkins series. They sound absolutely daft when you're explaining them to anyone (about a bell, book & candle wielding exorcist) but actually great fun & you do feel that he loves the characters & the countryside in which they are based.

Carl Hiaarsen - great plots and incredibly funny.

I don't particularly like crime books, but really fell for Lindsey Davies' "Falco" books. A Roman private investigator in about 72 AD. Very funny and very very well researched! The Silver Pigs is the first one.

I am very embarrassed to say this but I am LOVING The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by G W Dahlquist

I bought it on a whim thinking 'oh dear this isn't quality fiction but it does look interesting' and it is the most fantastic kind of quality trash ever

it is like Sherlock Holmes meets The Story of O

and there is loads of escaping and creeping down corridors and eating scones and running up and down dark lawns

utter twaddle and ever so ever so long

Might have to try it Cappuccino. it got very mixed reviews if I remember, but then I'm always up for a bit of quality trash!

William Boyd- I think he's absolutely brilliant....
Khaled Hosseini- The kite Runner is one of the best books i ever read, and have just read A Thousand Splendid Suns- fab.

Janni- hi I like Anne Tyler too- do you like Anita Shrieve? Alice Hoffman? Donna Tart- gosh, I'd forgotten her, but she doesn't write many books....
