26-ish books 2024

A shiny new thread for 2024.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

I'll join if that's ok!

I read 2023 in 23 but thinking of upping my goal to 30 this year as I know I could have read more but had a wee dip in the middle of the year.

MyloC · 01/01/2024 11:59

Sorry should add I have just finished The Institute by Stephen King.
Next read is All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

angieloumc · 01/01/2024 12:05

My first this year is Learned by Heart by Emma Donoghue. I got eight books for Christmas gifts (all lovely hardbacks) so this is one of them.

Snozzlemaid · 01/01/2024 12:25

My goal last year was 25 but I only managed 19.
Will try harder this year.
I've started the Elizabeth Gaskell read along of Ruth. I'm also reading Ann Cleeves' first Shetland book, Raven Black.

Eggling · 01/01/2024 12:25

Can I join please? Hoping to get back to reading a bit more this year and try and reduce time on my phone etc. My first this year will be Eve Green by Susan Fletcher, which DH found a second hand copy of for me for Christmas. I also have Clara and the Sun on the go during my commute but only go into the office once a week or so so that's been slow going, will hopefully finish that one next.

EasterIssland · 01/01/2024 12:55

I'm doing the read along of Ruth too

raven black is my favourite Shetland book. Hope you enjoy it

StoorieHoose · 01/01/2024 13:21

I'm going go for 30 books I think

I've broken my FanFiction habit and will get on with reading all the books I have in my TBR pile

MercuryRising · 01/01/2024 13:51

I would like to join although I'm not sure I will manage 26. If I manage 20 I will be pleased. I do look forward to following along and getting lots of recommendations.

Hello all and happy new year

My goal is the same as last year - 25, but I only managed 16 new reads.

Might count re-reads/listens this year but either way I want to read more, scroll less, and make a proper dent in my TBR pile!

Citygirlrurallife · 01/01/2024 14:10

Hello everyone! I ended up with 31 despite a big lull in the middle of the year. I’m not going to have an aim because sometimes I find then I go into a book thinking I must finish it for the list when maybe I’d otherwise give up on it and have more time for books I actually want to read.

i count audiobooks I listen to for pleasure and bigger novels I read with my pre-teen but not books I read and prep for work

i have a lot of books I’ve bought in the last year waiting to be read but also have a hankering for some classics as I haven’t done that in a while so I think Wuthering Heights and some Dickens might hit my list this year

Iamblossom · 01/01/2024 15:04

Topbird29 · 01/01/2024 15:19

Hi. I'll join - I need to scroll less and read more! Have a big tbr pile to work through. I lurked last year, but only managed about 6 books - 2 on holiday! This year should be a bit calmer and more settled - last year I went back to work - only part time but am back to juggling loads of things - my eldest started secondary and we were still redecorating the house. Hoping for a more structured year, and might aim to do a minimum of 30mins reading per day. Last book I read was "Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow". First for this year is "The couple at the table" by Sophie Hannah.

TheDonsDingleberries · 01/01/2024 15:21

Currently reading The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin.

The story is set over 2 days and nights, and follows Lynette who lives in Portland, Oregon with her mum and developmentally disabled brother, whom she spends a lot of time looking after. In addition to her caring responsibilities, Lynette works several jobs to make ends meet and attends college. She's desperate to buy the run down house the family currently rents before they're priced out of the neighbourhood, but just as it finally seem to be within reach, shit hits the fan.

I'm about halfway through now, and it's extremely fast paced but I'm enjoying it a lot. Lynette is a really interesting character, and I simultaneously want to shake and hug her mum.

Nordicmom · 01/01/2024 15:53

I’ll be here

Troubledwords · 01/01/2024 16:58

I'm in. Had set myself the target of 26 last year and did 27, so upped it this year to 30. With the aim of the majority being books I haven't read before.

First book started this year is The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, via audiobook. I prefer physical books, but got this one for a coach trip and didn't listen to it, so I've started it today instead.

drspouse · 01/01/2024 17:09

Hello!
That's all!

Thebookdragon · 01/01/2024 18:44

Can I join in? I have a massive to read pile and was going for a ‘Year of Wonder’ thread but can’t find one!
back later with my January list.

EffortlessDelegation · 01/01/2024 19:41

Thank you, I am going to try and read more actual books this year (;ast year was mostly audio with a few kindle). I need to clear shelves that I have filled from charity shops.

@TheDonsDingleberries I have read a couple of Willy Vlautins, Lean on Pete and The Motel Life, both were excellent.

I am currently reading Kammy, the memoir of Chris Kamara, who is a former player for my football club and much loved TV pundit/personality.

ConsistentlyPeeved · 01/01/2024 20:04

Hello!

I'm new, love reading but end up doom scrolling. I'm putting myself down for 12 as with my lifestyle I think one a month is manageable.

toffee1000 · 01/01/2024 21:18

I managed 12 “complete” books last year, as well as about 2/3 of a 13th. Let’s see if I can get to double figures again this year… I didn’t get any books for Christmas, but then I didn’t particularly want any (by which I mean I didn’t have any particular title in mind).

ItWillBeDone · 01/01/2024 21:21

I'm going to aim for 20 this year and see where I get to. Feel like I'm cheating a little as I've just finished my first.

  1. Holly, Stephen King
Orangebadger · 01/01/2024 23:23

I only made 14 last year, but it was a very busy year with so much less reading time!

I'll aim for 24-30 this year. 2 a month is usually doable for me.

1) My Family and other animals by Gerard Durrell.

NashvilleQueen · 02/01/2024 00:01

I'll join pls. I managed 20 last year which was a huge increase on the previous few years but I sort of stopped for several months around autumn so plenty of scope to get to 26.
