A shiny new thread for 2024.

All welcome and note 26 is just a number. Everyone can set their own target and you are welcome here even if you only read 3 books a year.

I personally count the larger novel style books I read to my children and audio books I listen to. Others don't and there are no rules.

I look forward to all your suggestions again this year.

I'm in! Currently reading Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey which I am really enjoying.

listening via my Libby app to the Alice Network by Kate Quinn which I am also loving

hereandthere27 · 02/01/2024 00:17

I'd like to join, I followed the thread last year but didn't actually post. I found it really good for recommendations and looking forward to seeing what everyone's reading this year too.

I'm currently reading Hegemony or Survival by Noam Chomsky. I usually like political / historical non-fiction but this one's a bit hard going.

I just about got to the 26 by finishing a kindle book and by reading a book I gave my son that was boring . I’ll aim for the same 26 this year , I went a few books over in -22 . I’m 2/3 through the new Hercule Poirot then I’ll start my book no 1. I have a few in my drawer now ,I got some for Christmas ,then might look at my kindle and other people’s books in the shelves of this house .

Nordicmom · 02/01/2024 11:11

@ItWillBeDone did you like Holly ? I read it last year too and did enjoy it !

I did. Though I couldn't eat any festive snacks while reading it!

StragglyTinsel · 02/01/2024 12:24

I just finished Iron Wing. It was pretty dreadful, but silly enough for a no-brain required read. If you choose to read it, I recommend not thinking too much because otherwise then you’d have to acknowledge stupidity of the plot and the fact that the world building makes no sense, which would be enormously off putting.

I have a 3 year old. I’m not counting any of the (what will feel like) several million books I will read him this year (many re-reads involved).🤣

Nordicmom · 02/01/2024 12:56

@StragglyTinsel did you mean “Fourth Wing “ the first book or “ Iron Flame “ the second book by Rebecca Yarros ? I read the first but at about 500 pages I found it far too long . I felt like I was never going to finish it . I do have the second one too but I’ll read other ones before it …
@ItWillBeDone I know what you mean about eating while reading “ Holly “
😁! I really liked it . I’ve read a lot of Stephen King in the last 30 y and as with anything some books I’ve enjoyed more than others but generally I’m a big fan …

Nordicmom · 02/01/2024 13:00

I’m here wondering if I should aim to double my 26 goal but I know that I won’t finish a book a week always especially if they’re thick ones I tend to read . I’m often so tired that it won’t happen . I’ll probably just see how I go and keep on enjoying reading more than I did for a few years back when I had fallen out of the habit and just stared at screens and read newspapers and magazines more .

StragglyTinsel · 02/01/2024 13:03

I read both @Nordicmom. And then mixed the names up. 🤣

the second one is both longer and worse than the first. It’s enormously long and just meanders around the place with repetition of exactly the same pointless argument between the main characters and gaping plot holes that make no sense.

I dread think what kind of mess the world building will be in after 3 more books.

Walikingdeadfan · 02/01/2024 13:09

I'm in. Managed 26 last year so going to aim for 30 this year. Just bought a whole lot of 99p books for kobo. Starting the year, with Still Life one of the Karen Pirie books by Val Mcdermid.

Nordicmom · 02/01/2024 13:37

@StragglyTinsel I will then see if I want to read the whole book ! I generally give 50-100 pages to a book and I won’t finish it if I’m too bored or I’ll just skim it . Life is too short !

It’s about 250k words long. but definitely skimmable. 🤣

SlightlyJaded · 02/01/2024 14:01

Thank you. Just managed my 26 last year.

Am currently mid-way through 'Burial Rites' by Hannah Kent. It's a slow burner but I am completely absorbed.

drspouse · 02/01/2024 17:56

Just finished no 1, The Early Birds by Laurie Graham. I love her stuff. Some day I will learn to say more eloquent things about books.

Nordicmom · 02/01/2024 18:07

I might have just preordered “ Come and get it “ by Kiley Reid who’s “ Such a fun age “ I read - few years ago …

princessspotify · 02/01/2024 19:46

I'd like to join. I only read 4 books last year but aim to do better this year.

EuniceLopril · 02/01/2024 19:59

I'd like to join please. I was going for 26 but my first book of the year is The Thorn Birds. Reading on Kindle and hadn't realised how long it is, so I'm cutting my 26 target to 24! I haven't read it before. I remember my mum watching the mini series back in the early/mid 80s but I had zero interest in it back then.
I haven't decided on the remaining 23 books. I'd like to read at least a couple of classics.

Edited

Burial Rites is one of my favourite books of all time - if you continue to love it I highly recommend The Mercies if you haven't read it already

Finished Book 1 - What the T? by Juno Dawson, as recommended by my eldest who is 15 and gender questioning. So a personal read for personal reasons I don't really want to get into!

Taytocrisps · 02/01/2024 21:47

Can I join? I've joined the 50 books thread a few years running but never make it past the first month or so. I'm not too bad at reading the books but tend to forgot to list them all. Anyway, I think 26 is more realistic. I'm in a book club (and thinking of joining a second one - haven't quite decided) so will be reading ten or so books for that.

Book No. 1 is Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. It's a bookclub selection. I'm only 60 pages in but really enjoying it so far. It's very different from my usual type of book. I won't say too much about it yet because I'm still trying to figure it out but I'm intrigued.

Taytocrisps · 02/01/2024 21:51

@Iamblossom I loved A Gentleman in Moscow

Taytocrisps · 02/01/2024 21:57

@Orangebadger My Family and Other Animals is an old favourite. I think I first read it as a child and have also come back to it over the years as an adult.

SlightlyJaded · 02/01/2024 21:59

I haven't read that @Citygirlrurallife but will definitely give it a go afterwards. I am so moved by Agnes' plight and the descriptions of rural Iceland are completely captivating.

Taytocrisps · 02/01/2024 22:00

@MadamVastra I really liked The Alice Network

Taytocrisps · 02/01/2024 22:02

@hereandthere27 Noam Chomsky takes me back to my college days. We promptly christened him Noam Chimpsky. We thought we were hilarious! I'm afraid I don't remember much of his theories.

Tipster100 · 02/01/2024 22:06

I'd love to join in. I'm going for 12 but would love to achieve a few more than that. I'm starting with Antarctica by Claire Keegan and then hoping to read either The Bee Sting or Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I've got piles ready to go so wish I had more time. Am going to go to bed now and make a start.
