50 Books Challenge 2024 Part One

1000 replies

Southeastdweller · 01/01/2024 08:30

Welcome to the first thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2024, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

If possible, please can you embolden your titles and maybe authors as well of books you've read or going to read? It makes it much easier to keep track, especially when the threads move quickly at this time of the year.

Who's in for this year?

I’m in after a great year on the thread in 2023. (Was BaruFisher- new year name change)
Thanks for setting it up again Southeast

ChessieFL · 01/01/2024 08:35

Thanks for the shiny new thread southeast.

I’m partway through Time Shelter and The Common Years, and Nicholas Nickleby for that readalong. I’ve also just started the Ruth readalong and also Year of Wonder (once I work out the best way to listen to the music!). So a few things on the go but some of those are for the long haul.

shellyleppard · 01/01/2024 08:35

I'll give it a go.... thanks for organizing it. First on my list is mortal engines, my Christmas present from my teenage sons. But I secretly think they want to read it too lol

Southeastdweller · 01/01/2024 08:37

Also - every year on the first thread the same question is asked - can I bring books over from last year? The answer is always that some people do and some don't, it's up to you.

Decklededge · 01/01/2024 08:38

Hello, I’m doing it this year.
I am reading Year of Wonder too (second attempt as I got behind in March and gave up).
I wish everyone a happy year of reading!

Decklededge · 01/01/2024 08:39

I need to choose a book to read this morning. Exciting!
I have a massive tbr to tackle and a need to declutter.

HollyGolightly4 · 01/01/2024 08:41

I'm beginning 2024 with In Order to Live by Yeonni Park which is subtitled 'A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom'.

Fascinating so far, I'm in.

Bookwormmumuk · 01/01/2024 08:52

I'm joining in this year for the first time after seeing the thread last year 😁 currently reading To Be Taught If Fortunate by Becky Chambers.

ÚlldemoShúl · 01/01/2024 09:01

I’m carrying through Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Salt Lane by William Shaw. I’m also starting Another Year of Wonder this morning but that will be ongoing all year.

splothersdog · 01/01/2024 09:04

Happy new year.
I am in!
Currently reading Prophet Song by Paul Lynch

MorriganManor · 01/01/2024 09:07

Good morning and Happy New Year! Thanks as ever to @Southeastdweller for keeping these threads going. Flowers
Was BoldFearlessGirl, namechanged for 2024.

I am starting the new year with Tomorrow x3 which I feel has slumped halfway through but I will persevere. The urge to slap some characters upside the head is strong in this one Grin
Also working my way through Angela Slatter’s backlist.

I’ve had a rough count up and by TBR pile is already over 50, so should a catastrophe happen that means I can’t buy any new books whatsoever I will be ok. But in true 50 Booker style I can’t see myself not adding to that pile….

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 01/01/2024 09:10

I doubt I’ll manage 50 books with a clingy baby who barely lets me have any time to myself but I’ll give it a go. I’m currently reading a Christmas carol and other Christmas readings by Charles Dickens. The plan was to finish it over Christmas and start a new book today and I haven’t managed it so I’m already behind.

CluelessMama · 01/01/2024 09:10

Happy New Year!
I'm in again for 2024 😀
Thanks @Southeastdweller
Currently reading The Long Shadow by Celia Fremlin.

ThelmaDinkley · 01/01/2024 09:10

Morning, currently reading Weyward by Emilia Hart and have just finished Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson about the Pendle witches.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 01/01/2024 09:15

Happy New Year 50 Bookers 🍾🥂 thanks for the thread Southeast.
I'm back in this year, although don't expect to make 50 books, currently about half way through The Second Sight of Zachery Cloudesley.

TimeforaGandT · 01/01/2024 09:17

Thank you southeast!

I am currently reading Trust - Hernan Diaz

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2024 09:20

Thanks @Southeastdweller

@MorriganManor I think that urge will get stronger as you continue reading. I enjoyed it overall, but I really hated some of the things that one character in particular did.

Happy new reading year, everyone. No challenges, targets or plans here, but I’m hoping to find some good fiction.

Yellowface is in the kindle deals. Is it dreadful?

Piggywaspushed · 01/01/2024 09:21

Thank you! Due to finish Rory Stewart this morning.

HettySunshine · 01/01/2024 09:21

I finished my last book of 2023 at 11.53 last night and I think that took me to 64.

I've started The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Perry this morning and I'm looking forward to another bookish year!

Happy reading everyone.

YnysMonCrone · 01/01/2024 09:24

I used to be a regular a few years ago, but not been reading regularly since mid 2022. Have listened a bit on Audible but not really picked up a book since then.
Really hoping to make 50 but in reality 30 would be a massive achievement for me.
My first of the year will be Running Grave. Got about 3 hours left on Audible.

Waving to old names I recognise and newbies 👋

Sadik · 01/01/2024 09:25

Thanks SouthEast and good morning all. Having a slow morning finishing off The Vanishing Half

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 01/01/2024 09:29

Hello and happy new year! Thanks for setting up the thread @Southeastdweller 😊

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 01/01/2024 09:33

Good morning all. I'm definitely joining this year, I've just started reading again and would like to continue! Last year finished on 12 books which I was pretty happy with.
Starting the year with something very easy - The Last Train Home by Elle Cook.

Gingerwarthog · 01/01/2024 09:42

Happy New Year everyone.
I read 39 books last year and am currently reading The Chateau: Forever Home by Dick and Angel Strawbridge. This was a Christmas present from my husband as he knows I loved the series. (Yes I'm a fan, bought the Chateau duvet covers and everything). This is a gentle, feel- good book and I love the patience and determination the Strawbridges showed in restoring the chateau. Seemed like a good choice for New Year, as regards starting projects and seeing them through.

Owlbookend · 01/01/2024 09:46

Happy new year 50 bookers 🍻Thanks for the new thread @Southeastdweller and welcome to all the newbies. 46 last year - might not have made the 50, but these threads keep me motivated and the recommendations have led me to books I'd otherwise have never discovered. Celia Fremlin & Ruth Adam were interesting new discoveries from last years threads.
Starting off this year with The Cutting Season a mystery thriller set in the modern day south.
