Geology/earth science recommendations?

I need a Christmas present for an earth sciences student. Share your recommendations for books about geology, earth sciences, volcanoes, anything rock-ish please! Preferably something fun to read rather than strictly informational.

Would they like a rock or fossil of some description rather than a book?

One of my children is studying earth sciences, and it’s a lot of work. I think she would prefer not to have to read more books in her free time!

There is a nice little fossil shop in Rochester High Street called “I Dig Dinos” if you that is not too far away. But there are fossil shops all over the place, really.

Or maybe a biography of Mary Anning or James Hutton or a lovely geological map of your area?

Wider than geology/earth sciences but fantastic - Andrea Wulf's 'The Invention of Nature'. About Alexander von Humboldt.

I really wouldn't want a pop science book about my subject. They'll already know everything that's in it and be able to spot the mistakes, and would probably like a Christmas break.

The best gift you could give a geology student are really nice coloured pens or pencils, a Buff or a pair of waterproof gloves. A pair of nice fingerless gloves would also be useful. Lego dinosaurs are good for nearly everyone.
