Bought myself a new book yesterday and started to read it last night. Thought it sounded awfully familiar… yep. I already owned the book.

Was not impressed

Haha, you sound like me.

I've been known to watch a film and only realise 10 min before the end that I've seen it before...

Mothership4two · 18/11/2023 11:22

Yep have done the same - book and film/TV series

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 18/11/2023 13:36

I've definitely done the same. The lovely bookseller let me swap.

Soubriquet · 18/11/2023 13:58

I would do that but it’s from Amazon so I’m stuffed. I’m just pleased it wasn’t over £10

This is partly why I like my Kindle. It tells me if I have already bought the book. I have over 800 books on it so it's easy to forget if I have already bought a title.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 18/11/2023 14:31

Can you give it as a gift to someone?
You must think it's really good 😁

Soubriquet · 18/11/2023 14:34

Nah. No one I know would read it. Never mind. I’ll..get the second one at some point. Grin

Even then.... I got about 3/4 of the way through a book I bought on Kindle and realised I'd seen a particular plot development before. Either I'd had the book from the library at some time in the past, or another author has used that exact same plot point, with the characters reacting in the exact same way.

Didn't matter so much, as it was part of one of those boxset for £1.99 jobbies, and I hadn't read the others in the series - or if I had, I don't remember them.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/11/2023 17:11

Oh I've done that too ! For me, the annoying part isn't so much the wasted money, it's that you anticipate the lovely evening curling up with your new book .... I normally end up re-reading.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 18/11/2023 17:12

I don't think kindle tells you if you've borrowed the book as part of Kindle unlimited though - does it?

KirstenBlest · 18/11/2023 17:14

I've found three copies of the same book, and several instances of two copies.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 18/11/2023 18:08

Not only have I done that but I've bought a second copy of a book, the first copy of which I donated to the charity shop as I wasn't impressed with it.

Axelotl · 19/11/2023 13:10

Also done that- a Bill Bryson book from a charity shop. Started reading it and it seemed familiar. I still read a fair few chapters of it before realising I had read it before.

KirstenBlest · 19/11/2023 14:05

@Axelotl , I had two of those. Not only that but I had bought one before that and someone borrowed it and never gave it back. I read it, gave it to the charity shop and I kept one for my bookshelf.

I once re-read a library book. It was a lightweight novel and although it seemed a bit predictable, I was about 2/3 of the way through before I realised I'd read it before.
