Hi - can anyone recommend an interesting, well written, non mainstream novel for an extremely well read friend. He and I exchange books to introduce each other to writers new to us and I’ve run out of ideas ! Thank you!

Rohan Mistry.

A Fine Balance, to be explicit

Also: Trollope
Hugh Dewey's Dust trilogy

Also Patrick O'Brien. Always Patrick O'Brien. The series id rescue if the house was on fire.

Have you read Richard Powers?
If not, start with Orfeo, The Echo Maker, or the Overstory.
Or anywhere else if it takes your fancy obviously! 😄

Also have you read John Banville?
And Anne Enright?
Both Irish, both wonderful.

I have but there’s a good chance he hasn’t so thank you! Excellent idea!

I loved Amor Towles' A Gentleman in Moscow, and Joseph O'Connor's The Star of the Sea.
Thanks for this - need some ideas for book group.

Per Petterson.
I can do this forever (until some more people turn up). I'm a flipping book addict.
Totally agree with the first suggestion by the way, Rohinton Mistry.

Quietmouse · 16/11/2023 19:39

I’ve been checking these suggestions out and love the sound of all of them - I love that I have so much to explore in 2024! I’d got stuck in a bit of a rut with my book choices!

Siri Hustvedt! Everything she's written but especially What I Loved. Wonderful book.

Also An Equal Stillness by Francesca Kay.

Both of these are novels about fictional artists.

Thank you! My friend is a writer, he’s being mentored by Zadie Smith so hopefully he’ll be on people’s lists one day!
