Gawd I CRIED so much but I don't really think it was a great book, in fact I'm not sure I really enjoyed it. Doesn't make me want to read GE either as am a classic literature eejit. What a strange book.

Great Expectations is a good book. You should give it a go.

I'm currently reading Mr Pip whilst reading Steinbeck's East of Eden and ignoring Dombey and Son which I should be reading!

Great Expectations my favourite book of all time. Hated Mr Pip. Badly written and can't understand how it got on the Booker shortlist. Made me quite cross it was so bad, actually.

Interesting. I haven't read it as it didn't appeal in the bookshop.
(No surprise that crap stuff gets on the Booker shortlist though)

I'm about a third of the way through and finding it ...... interesting, I suppose ..... I definitely want to finish it, but will reserve judgement until then.

I came on here looking for opinion on this book. I just read it and I found it quite poor. I found it was written very factually and whilst the character states that this is deliberate in line with Dickens. I really thought that the shocking incidents were not as powerful as they could have been. I was really disappointed in it.

swerve · 15/04/2008 16:19

opinion seems to be divided neatly. if you like GE, you don't like MP. If you like MP, you haven't read GE. I'm the former (GE = greatest english language novel - unless that honour goes to Vanity Fair). This thread reminded me that I have forgotten to finish MP. I put it down with about 50 pages to go and it's completely slipped my mind to finish it. I suppose I should... but let me finish my magazine first.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/04/2008 08:21

Hmmm, I think I read GE at school. I don't remember liking it.

I'm about half-way through MP and not at all interested, tbh. I don't really 'buy' the character's voice, somehow. (I started a thread about it last week.)

Swerve, just chiming in again to say your top two books of all time are the same as mine! GE and VF. GE is lovelier and cosier but VF just so sparkling and brilliant....
