Has anyone else read this?? I though it was rubbish. But having read reviews it's obviously going over my head Hmm

I cannot stand books that come over as if they author is showing off all the research they've done rather than a good story.

As I was reading it it did remind me of Middlemarch (a book so boring I never finished it). The jumps back and forth were annoying. The bit about the plantation was the only moderately readable bit.

I'm impressed you actually finished it which is more than I could.

Haha. No, I would imagine the percent of non completists is quite high :-)

Not a fan. Zadie Smith is ridiculously overrated. I don't means she's bad – just overpromoted and overpraised.

hopeishere · 23/10/2023 18:20

I would agree. I read a few reviews that didn't like it but a lot of the main ones were raving about it.

oh I have been meaning to read this. I love historical fiction though. Is it that dull?

Agree. Always been a media darling, whereas other authors get far less attention.

It's more it's all over the place. And a bit boring. And trying to be too clever.

ha I did think she evoked the era so well, but agree the family of characters surrounding the housekeeper lacked something. I do like historical fiction though and other Zadie Smith.
