50 Books Challenge 2023 Part Nine

Welcome to the ninth thread of the 50 Books Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2023, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it’s not too late to join, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

I couldn’t find the deals either but I have an excel spreadsheet containing my 150+ wish list books and I copied and pasted each one into Amazon. Yes I was that bored this afternoon!

I ended up buying lots. The first Shetland novel, Mrs S, Vladimir, Fried Green Tomatoes which I've never read before, Coming Home (while I'll save because I can only cope with one Rosamund Pilcher book per year), and a stupid Christmas themed romance which I thought would be fun to read in the holidays. I've been browsing my many kindle books a lot recently and finding nothing to read, so time I restocked I guess!

I noticed The Midwich Cuckoo’s (probably spelt that wrong) is only 99p. Anyone read it?

Do you mean First Reads? I didn't get my usual email about it

I loved it when I read it in my teens 40 years ago. May not have aged well.

I can’t find the monthly deal, just the daily one and some random crap of ‘bestsellers’ and ‘Various Festive Shit’.

I also liked Cuckoos when I read it back in the Dark Ages.

I did wonder how it’s aged but for 99p it’s worth a punt.

I don’t know what Prime First Reads is, sorry. I don’t have Prime because other than Kindle books (needs must) I try to largely avoid Amazon.

Oh I read John Wyndham as audiobooks but I can't get on board with the narration on Cuckoo so thanks!

If anyone’s desperate to read Nigel Slater's Christmas Chronicles, that’s down to 99p. There seemed to be lots there but I’ve already got most of it, annoyingly. I did buy something about the recovery of Shackleton's vessel.

Well as I can't find the monthly deals I won't be buying anything

@minsmum this is how I did it - go to the Kindle Books page. Click on Kindle Daily Deals (at the top of the page). Then on the column on the left it should say 'See all deals'. Click on that.

I then got a page with various different categories of books and deals, but just kept scrolling down until I got to the month's deals (the first picture I’ve attached). If you go right to the bottom it says 'see all results' (second picture) - if you do that, you should get all 85 pages!

I've read The Midwich Cuckoos in the past few years and liked it, but I generally love John Wyndham.

Thanks for the book's recommendations @EineReiseDurchDieZeit and @RomanMum I'll give them a go, although I think I need to leave a break before reading another 9/11 book. I need something easy as I have another cold so finding concentrating on a book a challenge. Might have to revisit a comfort read like Harry Potter or St Mary's.

Now trying to decide whether I want to read the second Atlas Six book for 99p. I know someone on here read it & their review made me think maybe not even for cheap...
