Southeastdweller · 22/07/2023 19:33

Welcome to the seventh thread of the 50 Books Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2023, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, it’s not too late to join, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

The first thread of the year is here, the second one here, the third one here here, the fourth one here, the fifth one here, and the sixth one here

Thank you @Southeastdweller .

Yes, the threads seem to be zipping by this year!

BaruFisher · 22/07/2023 19:43

Thank you for the new thread @Southeastdweller

I’m not going to do my list again until the last thread of the year I think as it’s getting too long to retype on a mobile phone!
what I can say is that in 48 hours book 84 has grabbed me by the lapels and shaken me out of my reading slump.

84 Kala by Colin Walsh
This book is on the shortlist for the Waterstones Debut Prize which brought it to my attention. (I’ve already read and loved two of the list which cross over with the Women’s Prize longlist - Fire Rush and Wandering Souls. I also own a fourth Close to Home but haven’t got around to reading it yet)
15 year old Kala disappeared from the west coast Irish town of Kinlough (based on Galway) in 2003. The book is told in the present day by three of her closest friends after the discovery of her remains in a nearby woods. The writing is beautiful, the three voices authentic and distinct and the plot propulsive. I’ve seen it described as a literary thriller which it well deserves. Fans of Tana French would enjoy it I think. A great book and a bold for me.

Thanks, southeast.

Re Norway, piggy, I don't know if you fancy some non-fiction, but I'm currently reading The Children of Ash and Elm, by Neil S Price ahead of my own trip in that direction. It's about the Viking Age so it's about the wider region, but I'm really enjoying it.

Stokey · 22/07/2023 21:19

Hi @snowspider The candy House and Birnam Wood are both on my wish list so I'm glad to see them highlighted.

@BaruFisher I just bought Kala too so looking forward to reading it. Am preparing a few books for what is looking very likely to be a very damp week in Ireland in August.

@Welshwabbit I just read Mrs Dalloway and think I got much more out of it as an older reader. I also read The Hours, Michael Cunningham's version, which you might enjoy.

I'm going to bring over what I've read since the last thread. Not quite as literary this time as having been struggling with vertigo and migraines for a few weeks so going for easy reads.

MamaNewtNewt · 22/07/2023 21:23

Welcome @snowspider.

91. See It End by Brianna Labuskes

This is the third book in the Dr Gretchen White series, and although I have enjoyed them all this is the best of the three. Dr White is a psychologist who consults for the Boston PD despite the fact she is a (non-violent) psychopath - as she says, think more Tech CEO bro than Ted Bundy. When her partner Lauren Marconi, one of the few people Gretchen actually likes, confesses to a murder Gretchen investigates and uncovers a lot of information about her friend that she had kept well hiddden. This book kept me absolutely gripped and I didn’t guess the ending, which is always a plus for me. Recommended, especially as the series is free on kindle unlimited.

Can't believe I've made it to 30, but 50 seems a long way off. Currently reading Vera by Elizabeth von Arnim, that I'm really not sure about. The jury is still out.* *

Aaargh. Messed up my numbering. Why don't lists work on here any more? I’ve read 48, not 49.

Thanks @Southeastdweller ! Great to see the threads so lively this year.

No list from me but currently reading Stasiland and still listening to Michael Palin’s Sahara. And also reading Stephen Donaldson’s Chronicles of Thomas Covenant for some nostalgic fantasy, as I’ve had a grim cold and not felt up to much else.

Welcome @snowspider (one of my favourite children's books!).

@Stokey I read and enjoyed The Hours years ago. Thanks for reminding me - it's probably due a re-read!
