Apparently it was a Richard and Judy book club choice so someone must have done!

Really enjoyed it- it captured the people and landscape perfectly. Anyone else?

yes - me. I loved it (and in fact I interviewed him and he was a very nice man!) Loved the opening chapter, the way it focused in and in and in onto his parents' farm. If you liked this, maybe try Running for the Hills by Horatio Clare? Similar sort of feel ...

Thanks, I'll look out for that.

I agree about the opening chapter. In fact the whole thing is structured extremely well.

I can't get over the bizarreness of that taciturn, down-to-earth community producing someone who grows up to be an editor of The Face!

I liked this a lot, very moving.

He went to the school I teach at - the area's still pretty much the same, to be honest!

That's interesting badgermonkey. We haven't quite worked out his pseudonyms for places - we are assuming Kirksfield is Driffield but not too sure about Sowthistle....

His portrait of the Wolds is great though. We live near Pocklington and have been struck by:

  1. the vast number of tractor magazines in the local newsagents
  2. the quality and selection of toy farm equipment (model combine harvesters etc) in the local toyshops....
